Personal Description:

I am a professional mezzo-soprano and singing teacher. I perform as a soloist, largely in oratorio works, and sing in choirs including BBC Singers and Royal Military (Guards') chapel. I graduated with a Distinction in Vocal Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and with a 2.1 in Music at Kings College London for my undergraduate studies. I hold ABRSM diploma in Singing and grade 8 in Singing, Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 10 years of teaching experience. I teach at Wycombe Abbey and Godolphin and Latymer school alongside a strong private practice in Buckinghamshire.

My teaching experience covers all ability levels and all ages from young children to adults, with a focus on classical and musical theatre styles. My pupils have taken ABRSM and Trinity exams from prep test through to grade 8 with great success.

I have previously taught in many other schools and music centres in Buckinghamshire and London, including the Buckinghamshire Music Trust and The Misbourne School in Great Missenden. I have also taught larger singing classes for Stagecoach and have worked as a deputy teacher for various Saturday music schools, which included large classes of Music Theory and Kodaly method.

I have delivered musical workshops in many schools, including schools for children with learning disabilities and care homes for the elderly. I also worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language to both children and adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I work on helping students to develop a sound vocal technique and to improve their musicianship and performing skills so that they can grow in confidence. Lessons are always enjoyable and something to look forward to. I create a relaxed environment and promote an attitude of trying one’s best when addressing challenges. I am patient and adapt my teaching to each pupil.

I have a detailed knowledge of vocal technique and am committed to helping my pupils find greater vocal ease through improved technique. I am also constantly performing myself, so I know how to approach giving one's best performance.

I am happy both to prepare pupils to take musical examinations and to teach them without exams according to preference.

From Heggy (5/5): I've had my first 2 fortnightly lessons with Melissa, and they were lovely. She's very positive and patient, but without losing attention to detail and being challenging (which is what I was missing trying to DIY it!).
Her tech is great (mine wasn't but is improving).
She's given me a really challenging piece to start with, which is really stimulating.

She is really good at inculcating good techniques from the very start, which I think has been of great help to me. Also, her lessons are quite interesting, it never feels boring or a chore. She makes it fun and gives good tips all along the way during the lessons. I think she tailors the lessons according to the individual student's needs, hence it doesn’t feel too fast or too slow for me. She is quite patient, she understands and corrects my problems very well. I highly recommend Melissa as a piano teacher.

Melissa patiently helps me form good piano habits which were often overlooked by my other teachers in the past. When it comes to sport and music, usually I am quite difficult to teach (especially when I am already in my 30s), but with Melissa's effective approach, my piano has improved so much within such a short time period. What I also like about Melissa is her professionalism and punctuality - never late a single time, ever ! Very lucky to have a teacher like Melissa!

Melissa really impressed me with her patience and professionalism. If you're looking for a childminder who happens to know how to play the piano, please find someone else. But if you'd like a talented musician to help discover and nurture your child's love for music, Melissa is your best choice!

From Mark (5/5): I originally contacted Melissa a few months in advance of a visit I was to take to Munich in order to improve my communication skills within the German language.

Within a few months, my verbal communication had vastly improved and this assisted me greatly within my time spent in Munich.

I had previously attended group classes in the previous years but I felt within only a few months of having a private Tutor that I had learned more within those three months than I had within my group classes combined.

She is a very approachable, patient and knowledgeable teacher, settling any anxiety I may have had about attending a private Tutor beforehand very quickly who makes the lessons both enjoyable and productive.

If you have any hesitations, I can assure you that I highly recommend her as a teacher and upon my return from Munich I have continued to attend lessons with Melissa ever since.

I know she feels happy speaking German with you, this is something she was struggling to do in school and so these lessons give her the opportunity to practice and feel more confident when she tackles this at school. Melissa has been giving piano lessons to my 14yr old daughter for two years now. My daughter now loves playing the piano and I'm sure Melissa's inspiration went a long way for this.
My daughter sat grades 1&2 exams and in both she passed with ''Distinction' !
Melissa is very approachable, her communication is crystal clear, she always is flexible if the lesions need to be reorganised. She listens to what I and my daughter would like to happen and always plans the lessons accordingly.
My daughter wouldn't miss her piano lessons for anything ( which is quite unusual for a 14yr old with so much to do on her phone, computer, Xbox and so many other gadgets) - she wasn't very happy when we had to cancel her last week's lesson due to the snow.
Melissa is the perfect tutor. Her guidance and inspiration has made playing the piano a very enjoyable experience- which means my daughter now has a friend in her piano for the rest of her life.
