I am an experienced and fully qualified History Teacher. I have been teaching A level History in Sheffield since 2017.
I received a Secondary History PGCE from Cambridge University, and subsequently taught in a leading History Department in a secondary school in Cambridge. Since 2017 I have been teaching A level history in a Sixth Form College in Sheffield. I have experience of both teaching and examining AQA History A level. I currently teach the following topics at A level, and so will be able to provide specific detailed support with content for:
- The Tudors: England, 1485-1603
- Revolution and Dictatorship: Russia 1917-1953
- Industrialisation and the people: Britain, c1783-1885.
I would be able to support tutees studying any other A level History options as well. In particular, I have detailed knowledge of the following topics:
- Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945
- France in Revolution, 1774–1815
- The American Dream: reality and illusion, 1945–1980
- Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855–1964
- The Making of Modern Britain, 1951–2007
I will focus with tutees on essay writing, and give them direct instruction in how to structure essays, construct arguments and substantiate those arguments throughout their essays to ensure that they get the most credit possible for their subject knowledge. I can also work on approaches to sources and historians' extracts questions by a combination of seminar-style discussion about individual sources and extracts as well as direct instruction in how to structure responses to them.
For History, the most profitable area for improvement is often essay style. I aim, by working through practice questions, to get my tutees to be confident about knowing what to do when presented with an exam question. By working through questions relevant to their course, tutees will not only learn exactly what they need to do to go about constructing an excellent essay, but will also have a better idea of what they think about the content of their course, allowing them to think quickly and clearly in their exams. Help with revision techniques can also be useful.
