I am a friendly and enthusiastic electric guitar player and tutor based in Richmond, offering tuition for all ages and abilities. I have a BMus hons from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
I've played at venues in London and Cardiff including St. Martin's in the Fields, West Square, Lambert Festival, the Dora Stoutzker Hall, Dempsey's, and Cafe Jazz, gaining experience in all sorts of different ensembles, from big bands to jazz combos to soul, funk and blues bands. (I've also undertaken some interesting projects involving incorporating the electric guitar into classical groups.)
I also teach composition, arranging, and music theory.
Five years experience teaching people of various ages and from different walks of life. I've taught complete beginners, children, adults, and in one case an excellent classical guitarist interested in electric guitar styles and improvisation.
I specialise in blues, jazz and related styles such as funk and soul. Those are the styles I most enjoy playing, and am therefore best at teaching. I'll teach the skills and techniques necessary for students to advance in other genres, but I'm not the person to go to for heavy metal or grunge.
I like to teach students to read music and improvise and I include relevant music theory to compliment their guitar lessons. For me, the great appeal of music lies in being able to play with other musicians, I'm committed to teaching students what they need in order to function well in a band. The musicians I work with teach a variety of instruments, so I'm often able to put my students in touch with people learning other instruments to help them form their own groups.
