I have recently received a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and have previous degrees from Cambridge and Edinburgh. I am happy to tutor English (Language and Literature) and German to degree level, and History to A Level. I have over 5 years' experience teaching these subjects to a range of students, and have a track record of improving my students' confidence as well as their grades. I aim to make these subjects interesting and accessible and, above all, to encourage my students to become happy, confident learners.
I have significant experience teaching a wide variety of students, from secondary school pupils who need some extra support with English exams to adult learners who want to learn German for fun. My students benefit from the varied teaching experience I am able to draw upon. I have experience in undergraduate supervision, classroom teaching, and I offer support in preparing for exams up to degree level in the UK and internationally. I also offer help with interview preparation and school entrance exams, as well as editing and proofreading.
I have taught German literature and translation to undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge, and offer private tutoring in English and German at all levels. I have built a strong client base over several years, and have successfully helped many students through their GCSE and A Level exams, encouraging them to take charge of their learning and grow in confidence. I was recently able to help a pupil go from a grade 4 to grade 7 in English, which has enabled them to move on to further education in their chosen subjects.
I have also taught for the Brilliant Club, an outreach programme which offers university-style teaching to underrepresented students. In this role, I delivered a self-designed literature course to GCSE and A Level students. I have a particular interest in outreach work, and in helping students to reach their full potential through tutoring, where they may otherwise be left behind.
I offer structured teaching which is closely tailored to the individual needs of my students.
I usually begin lessons with a warm-up exercise to establish what the student recalls from the previous lesson, making a note of any aspects which we may need to approach again.
For students working towards exams, I will guide them through past papers, working in particular on aspects of the exam which they find most challenging. I work with my students to develop their critical thinking skills, and to help them become confident, independent learners.
Above all, I pride myself on helping my students to feel confident and at ease in our lessons, and enjoy seeing them succeed in their learning.
