Degree in biochemistry from Oxford. 2023 confirmed student destinations: medicine at Birmingham, Keele, Plymouth and Sunderland, veterinary medicine at RVC, biochemical engineering at UCL, pharmacology at Cardiff, genetics at York, degree-apprenticeship with BMW, engineering foundation year at Bristol. Congratulations!
I've been a private tutor for over ten years and hold a degree in biochemistry from Oxford. My students have gone on to courses in medicine, veterinary medicine, mathematics and many other top university courses.
My aims in tuition are to help students understand new things and develop their interests-and then be able to pass exams in them!
I hold an enhanced DBS check and am a member of the DBS update service.
I specialise in science and maths tuition and developing students’ numeracy skills. Past work in tuition includes private and public-sector tuition, summer and after-school tuition, work with children unable to stay in school for personal reasons and supporting recent immigrants to the U.K. I'm experienced at giving tuition by Skype and other video chat platforms.
Students I’ve tutored have gone on to medicine at UCL, Cambridge, Oxford, Queen Mary, Cardiff, Birmingham, veterinary medicine at RVC and Bristol, natural sciences at Cambridge, human sciences at Durham, population health at UCL, maths at Nottingham and York and psychology at King’s College London among other destinations, but I've supported students starting from a huge range of levels. I've also helped students at top schools including Westminster, Highgate, Harrow, Henrietta Barnett, RMS, St. Paul’s, St. Helen’s, QE Boys and Tiffin Boys. I've worked with families long-term; one of my clients I worked with continuously from 2013 to 2021 helping three of their children.
For me, planning lessons is really important: I’m keen to know what you want help with and what helps you enjoy learning. I care about writing thorough, interesting lesson plans and use pictures, videos and diagrams to help people really understand topics. If you're logged in, you can download some of my lesson plans to take a look-they're further down on my profile.
To help students practice for exams, I prepare booklets of real exam questions on a particular topic that range from easy to challenging, so that students can have the words ready to describe topics and answer questions. I also teach students from mark schemes so students can see exactly what examiners are looking for. Currently I have a library of over 700 packs of past paper questions across over more than 15 courses so if you want us to cover it, we can start working on it-immediately.
With learning science, I believe practicing numeracy is critical, especially with the current A-level courses. I bring along lesson plans adapted to the new courses on topics like percentages, unit conversions and statistical tests to make sure that students feel comfortable and in control with maths questions. With maths, I encourage common sense estimating and drawing diagrams to work out roughly what the answer should be to avoid big mistakes.
