Andrew

I am a knowledgeable, skilled and enthusiastic teacher. My degree in archaeology gave me the perfect course to allow my broad interests to flourish. I could learn about ancient cultures, changes through time, the changing environment and at the same time indulge my interest in psychology. I retain these passions today and they have enabled me to deliver exciting, challenging and above all inspiring lessons during a long and successful career. As of January 2024 I retired from mainstream teaching to dedicate more time to my educational passions: using my experience and knowledge to support individual learners, to use my psychology knowledge and teaching experience to promote wellbeing for all ages and to work on novel ways of being mindful.

Tutoring Experience

I have spent over thirty years teaching principally psychology (GCSE and A-Level), history (KS3, GCSE and A-Level), critical thinking (A-Level) and supervising the EPQ. I have also taught A-Level philosophy and the now discontinued general studies. I have spent over ten years as a Head of History and over fifteen years as Head of Social Science at schools in the south east of England. In this time I have built up a considerable body of specialist subject knowledge as well as practical and theoretical based learning strategies. For over ten years I was an A-Level (AQA) History examiner as well as a teacher-interviewer for prospective PGCE students at Chichester University. For several years I ran a day course for PGCE history students at Chichester university focusing upon creative approaches to differentiation. I have been graded as outstanding for my last three OFSTED observations. I was a Sixth Form tutor for over fifteen years and since 2019 I have devised and delivered specialist 1:1 and small group sessions to support sixth form students such as study skills, raising self esteem and motivation, most able support and mock interviewing. I have most recently written an in-school nurturing programme to help students develop better learning focus.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is always student-centred. I plan thoroughly so that I can deliver lessons which support the student's specific needs and abilities, encourage learning independence and helps to move them forwards in terms of their knowledge and their self-belief. I am a believer in the knowledge first and then skills approach and the importance of reviewing previous learning.
I am a patient, creative and inspiring teacher who has a very good understanding of individual learning needs and the skills to create and deliver successful lessons to meet these needs.
