I am a 52 year old father of two secondary school children and have been a classroom teacher of mathematics for 18 years (with 7 years of additional private tutoring experience). I work with passion, enthusiasm and love to show students that maths can be a fascinating and rewarding experience which they can take forward with confidence into their working lives.
I have taught Mathematics from ages eleven to eighteen for 18 years, specialising in preparing students for GCSE/IGCSE/A Level exams.
I am also an A Level and GCSE exam marker for Cambridge exam board, which gives me an excellent insight into the strategies and techniques crucial to exam success.
I have also tutored an Asperger's child in mathematics through eight years of schooling till his graduation. This required exceptional patience and calmness - something which I have always felt is the most important quality of a good teacher.
I understand that a classroom is not always a comfortable place for learners and some can struggle to keep up and do not get the individual attention they need to fully understand a particular topic. They leave the lesson feeling confused and do not necessarily have the confidence to ask the right questions, either during or after the lesson.
Therefore, my number one focus as a tutor and teacher of mathematics is boosting low confidence and self-esteem, as I strongly believe that this is the main area which holds back learners from achieving success. I believe that everyone can do mathematics and that a skilled teacher can really make a huge difference.
I tailor my approach to suit whatever needs addressing through careful diagnostic assessment of skills. I focus on weaknesses and gaps in knowledge and repair any misconceptions so that the learner has all the necessary foundations in place to move forward with confidence.
