Hi, I'm Andrew. I'm a Maths tutor, and a Maths and Music graduate from the University of Edinburgh.
Outside of academia, I enjoy composing music and cycling.
The real reason I studied maths is because I enjoy it. Solving problems is one of the most satisfying feelings in my opinion. I believe that the reason I feel this way about maths is because I was very lucky to have a string of great teachers who have made the subject interesting for me - I hope to pass that on to all of my students.
Exams can take the life out of maths for lots of people. I want to help maintain your interest for maths whilst preparing for the exam effectively.
I am available to tutor during the following times. Please get in touch if any of these suit you!
Monday: 12pm-6:15pm
Tuesday: 9am-9pm
Wednesday: 9am-9pm
Thursday: 9am-3pm
My first experience of teaching was in the RAF cadets teaching the younger cadets syllabus content.
I have also captained two sports at school. In this role I was responsible for coaching the sport to other members of the clubs. Now I work as a coach for one of these sports
I started tutoring A level and GCSE maths from the beginning of October 2020. As of now, I have around 1300 hours of tutoring experience.
My lessons structure will change from pupil to pupil. Whether we are looking at a topic that is new to you, or one that you've seen before but need a bit of help with, I will typically start with a quick discussion about the topic to help me assess where we need to start from. Then, I'll explain the relevent concept(s) and show you how to do an example to give you a chance to make notes. After that, we'll tackle a variety of varied examples together through discussion to deepen your understanding. During these examples, I will try to help you understand where you make mistakes, and how not to make them again.
Typically, as the exam approaches, instead of looking at questions by topic, we will shift our focus towards past papers, and use the time in lessons to go through any problems you have with them, and revise weaker topics.
Another type of lesson that works for some pupils is simply asking what kind of topics you're struggling with, and having a look at them in a crash course style.
The main strength of my lessons is that I understand that everyone learns differently. For me, the best part of tutoring is finding and refining the style of lesson that works for you.
