I offer private tuition at a variety of levels from GCSE or A Level support up to Oxbridge interview support and preparation for entrance exams (MAT, STEP). I also offer sessions to give students who want a challenge outside the school curriculum an opportunity to develop their problem solving skills.
I am currently a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Bristol. From the years 2019-2022, I was a mathematics undergraduate at Murray Edwards college, Cambridge.
-I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge (BA) where I studied undergraduate mathematics. I am now starting my third year as a PhD student at the University of Bristol;
-I was the Deputy Director and have taught for several years on the She Talks Science STEP Summer School at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, which has helped to deepen my understanding of how best to help students meet the challenge of preparing for admissions tests. I will take over the role of director for the summer school in the academic year 2024/2025;
-I have extensive experience of offering private tuition to sixth-formers for Cambridge maths interviews and STEP preparation;
-I have worked as a STEP examiner;
-I have first-hand experience of applying to Cambridge, and all aspects of the admissions process;
-I have two years experience teaching on the Sutton Trust and Intro to Uni summer schools;
-I have experience of marking the UK Maths Olympiad for Girls.
I find the most helpful way to lead a student to become a stronger problem solver is by exposing them to as many types of problems as possible and guiding them through with well-thought-out hints and discussions as to what it is that makes the problem a challenge. This approach I find teaches students to develop the out-of-the-box thinking style required to become unstuck when solving difficult maths problems whilst simultaneously helping them build a problem-solving toolkit in their minds.
One of the things I emphasise in my teaching for admissions tests, problem solving and interviews is giving students material to work on independently prior to and after sessions to deepen understanding. Students are strongly encouraged not to look at the hints until they have been stuck for at least half an hour.
