Hi, my name is Ben and I am currently studying an MSc in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. I studied my undergraduate BA in Philosophy at Cardiff University where I gained a first class degree with an average mark of 75. I went to school in Surrey and grew up in South West London. I also love music and have played trumpet in a number of jazz bands in the past.
While I was at sixth form I was involved in a scheme to help younger students with their writing skills. This allowed me to gain an understanding of how to provide targeted feedback to the student I was assisting. While at university I was president of the Cardiff University Philosophy Society and as part of this I set up and ran an essay 'surgery' where myself and other students would read the essay's of first year students and give detailed feedback.
My approach to tutoring is to focus on close reading of texts alongside writing essays and practice exams. Practising and becoming comfortable extracting content from a piece of writing and being able to effectively communicate ones thoughts is the best way to improve ones grades. I aim to help my tutees overcome problems they may have with elements of the course they are struggling with and assist them in turning these weaknesses into strong parts of a clear piece of written work.
