I am a highly professional yet friendly individual who is highly experienced in teaching English Language and Literature. I teach all of the major examining bodies including CIE, AQA, OCR and Edexcel. I understand how all students need to be stretched and challenged to gain the highest grade possible, even if English is not their favourite subject! There is a formula to passing GCSE English at different grades as all English teachers know - it's just that one to one teaching can help boost a student's confidence and ability. I hold a full DBS Certificate.
At A Level I teach both English Literature and English Language/Literature. Whether it is studying Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare or Atwood, I have a thorough, detailed understanding of literature and language. At A level the structure and analytical detail of essays is crucial; these are skills that can be learned and honed.
When I am not teaching or tutoring I can be found wandering around the countryside, London, museums or reading. My own students would say that I am a really, really good teacher, very different but easy to get on with.
I use Zoom (and other interactive programmes) to students. This has enabled all of them to achieve the highest grades in their CCTS. I am a GCSE examiner for one of the examination boards - so I really understand exactly what has to be done to achieve every grade for both the Literature and Language exams at GCSE. I have been a highly successful Head of Department and Assistant Head enabling students to maximise their potential. It also means that I really understand how to help any student (whatever their ability) as I have over 20 years experience teaching a very wide variety of students. I have tried and tested ways to help students engage with texts and the examination system. I have been tutoring for a number of years and all of my clients have exceeded their target grades.
I am very used to teaching students on the autism spectrum and with ADHD, as well as more able students.
My approach is tailored on the individual student and targets the specific areas skills which need to be built on, including spelling, punctuation and grammar. I am used to differentiating for all abilities and for students who may have very specific difficulties (although I am not a SEN specialist) or need to achieve the highest grades. Talking through texts with a student to ensure that they understand what they are reading is crucial, then modelling how to plan and respond to the question. It is all about practice; not because practice makes perfect (it can do), but because practice makes memory which means that students understand and are confident that they have all the skills required to tackle an unseen text or compare texts.
Currently I am only tutoring via Zoom to keep costs down for my clients.
