I am a retired teacher of chemistry. I am married with two grown up children and live in Lewes. I enjoy private tuition as it brings the teaching experience without the drawbacks inherent in teaching in a school. I have musical interests; these do not extend to teaching music, but do include some live performances. I also mark A level chemistry for OCR exams, and did so for Edexcel in the past.
I taught in two "inner city" comprehensive schools in London, beginning in 1975. Then briefly in Sutton as part of their "Science Support Team" before moving to an independent Girls school (gdst) where I became Head of Chemistry and stayed for twenty three years until retirement. I also taught in several revision courses at Easter time, but only for a period of five years. As Head of Chemistry, I was responsible for the organization of the chemistry curriculum throughout the school up to A level and including University entrance examinations. I developed a range of my own written teaching resources and animated powerpoint materials, some of which I still use as a tutor.
I believe very strongly in building the student's understanding of the subject at a fundamental level. I aim to give students the ability to organize their own learning and to motivate them to a degree of ownership of the subject. I am patient, but emphasize the need for students to work at this subject outside of tuition time. I am happy to answer student queries by email outside normal tuition sessions.
