Hi ! My name is Callum, I am currently studying for a masters in pure mathematics at the University Of Manchester, and recently graduated from the University Of Sheffield in mathematics (1st class Honours). I am half French, half British and currently live in Chorlton/Whalley. I love to teach and tutor, I think it is very rewarding to feel you are helping someone on their academic path. To date (03/2024) I have clocked up approximately 400 hours of tutoring experience. Among many things, I have a particular passion for music, and the great outdoors.
I have tutored extensively in mathematics from the age of 15, teaching a variety of mathematics to a wide range of abilities. More recently, through a university organised "PAL" programme, I helped tutor first year undergraduates in mathematics in the core yearlong course/module. I have also had very recent experience being a substitute teacher in maths lessons in a Sheffield school "All Saints". I have spent the past year supporting four GCSE students , two year 11 A-level students and a 2nd year university learner resitting exams. I am delighted that the two of my GCSE tutees who were sitting exams exceeded their expectations with their grades this summer (grade 7 - up from grade 3s and 4s for one, grade 9 for the other). Having attended many school's and colleges, I have been a student in the IGCSE , IB, AP programmes and know the ins and outs of the mathematics in each of these programmes.
Being half French, and a French national has made me 100% fluent in the language since I was able to talk. Therefore, I would be of great benefit to intermediate/advanced French speakers seeking to better their language skills. I currently have two motivated adult French tutees who have got stuck in and am proud to say have noticeably boosted their French skills since starting with me.
I have always managed to effectively tutor mathematics by taking a large step back if someone is stuck. I am patient in this approach, as I know the importance of time to understand a concept . Indeed, mathematics is all about setting a solid foundation to be able to tackle harder problems. I also like to help someone's understanding by looking at a certain piece of mathematics from a different angle, this is always possible and is one of the beauty's of the subject. I am very familiar with the types of questions that will inevitably turn up on a A-Level, GCSE, AP, IB or SAT exam. If getting a certain grade is important to you, and you need to brush up on your maths for upcoming assessments I have developed effective exam techniques and strategies over the years for maths at whatever level.
I would improve someone's French language skills through immersive conversation and accurate translation of words or phrases, which in my experience is the most effective way of progressing in any language. Typically I will prepare a text and or a audio file to analyse and prompt conversation. I have also gathered a series of excellent pronunciation exercises for those struggling with the tough French sounds (they're hard!). Supplementary reading and written work will also be greatly beneficial in most circumstances.
