A highly recommended and experienced 37 year old tutor with a strong academic background, I have worked as a tutor for over 15 years with great success. I mainly work through word-of-mouth recommendation and have reviews and references beyond the ones listed on this site. I specialise in 11+, although I do also teach 7+ and GCSE level in English and maths.
I'm a supportive, interactive tutor who aims to inspire all my students to achieve their full academic potential in an increasingly competitive sector. At the very least, I aim to instil academic confidence and critical thinking skills in my students so that school is easier and more enjoyable. I often work towards helping my students gain entry to specific schools. All of my students to date have succeeded in getting into at least one of their desired selective schools.
I specialise in tutoring towards London 11+ examinations; particularly for the following schools: Highgate, Channing, City of London, South Hampstead, Francis Holland, Henrietta Barnett, Latymer, Dame Alice Owen, Queens, North Bridge House, QE Boys, Forest, as well as other grammars and private schools in London.
My strengths as a tutor lies in my long experience of teaching, as well as my own writing, communication, organisational skills. I have a large number of resources (academic books, secondary sources and past papers) to use with students. I makes lessons as fun, engaging and interactive as possible, getting to know the individual learning styles of my students and basing lessons around what would help them the most.
I have an excellent academic record myself. I gained an 11+ scholarship to City of London School for Girls; 9 A*s at GCSE level; 4 A's at A level and the highest 1st Class BA Honours degree in English Literature from the University of Warwick in 2009. Since then I have worked as both a tutor and learning designer.
Due to high demand, I can only teach students who are able to travel to me. I only teach one-on-one as I believe it to be more effective than group sessions. I am flexible with lesson times and accept payments at the end of the month.
I live with my partner and our two young daughters near Lloyd park in Walthamstow. I have a lovely space for teaching here and I am also able to teach online. Some students prefer a mix of both.
I have over 15 years worth of tutoring experience, and have taught a large number of students, from primary to A Level, PGCE level and adult learners. I specialise in examination preparation, particularly towards the 11+ examinations for central London private and grammar schools. I have adapted my approach to tutor specifically for Cognitive Ability Tests as well as traditional maths, English, verbal and non-vernal reasoning exams.
Last year, I taught eight students towards the 11+ examination, two towards the 7+ exam, and two towards GCSE. All my students achieved excellent results (with the vast majority getting into every school they applied to, and all students getting into at least one preferred school). Both my GCSE students achieved 9s (A*) in English and the one I also tutored in maths received a 9 in that subject too.
All my students grew in their confidence and enjoyment of the core subjects, maths and English.
Since I started tutoring, two of my 11+ students received full academic scholarships to top North London private schools, which was incredibly rewarding.
Additionally, I have helped a university student achieve a 1st Class Honours degree in English literature from Bristol University, and countless other students expand their knowledge base, grow confident in their writing and mathematical skills, and reap the rewards of academic success.
I work systematically with tutees to help strengthen their skills and cover any gaps in their knowledge. I have access to a large number of academic resources in order to help tutees with revision, coursework and exam preparation. I help build up the confidence of my tutees to put them in the strongest position for passing exams and gaining the best possible marks. Many students struggle with unhelpful learning strategies for years; I have tried and tested methods for success.
I am a very friendly, organised and supportive tutor. I make lessons as engaging, fun and interactive as possible - using visual aids, creative tools and utilising the child's ideas, whilst sticking firmly to the brief/curriculum. I believe that tutors should encourage children, understand what methods work for them, and help children develop their ideas. The educational process should be enjoyable and fulfilling, bolstering a child's confidence, while pushing them to realise their full academic potential.
I do believe in researching thoroughly what has been tested before as the best indicator of what is to come in the forthcoming exam. For this reason, I conduct up-to-date research on specific schools students are aiming to gain entry to and tailor my approach accordingly. I also mainly work with past papers, of which I have a substantial supply.
I am able to adapt my approach to tutoring in order to suit the bespoke needs of my tutees. I build strong working relationships with my students and am flexible with lesson times. Please get in touch with any questions you might have!
