Carly

I am a dedicated probation officer and a school governor at a local primary school, where I actively contribute to the educational environment, the safeguarding and the well-being of students. I also run my own mentoring company, focusing on supporting young people aged 10-19, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN) and those facing adversity and behavioural challenges. My passion for fostering the growth and development of children drives my work, and I believe that empathy and understanding largely contributes to making a positive impact.

In addition to my professional pursuits, I’m a proud mother to a lively toddler which enriches my perspective on child development and well-being. I love spending quality time with my family and friends, and I enjoy dance and music, which are my favourite ways to express creativity. Overall, I am a warm, patient, and hardworking individual, committed to empowering young people and helping them navigate their unique journeys.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experience in education, beginning as a dance and performing arts teacher for many years. In recent years, I have focused on providing one-on-one support in special educational needs (SEN) provisions and pupil referral units (PRUs), where I've worked with young people across all subjects to help them prepare for exams and succeed academically.

My background in working with children with SEN has equipped me with a deep understanding of how to motivate, engage, and teach each young person in a way that resonates with their individual learning styles. I am adept at identifying the most effective strategies for each student, enabling them to achieve the best possible results and develop the skills necessary for independent learning.
I have had the privilege of working with young people with diverse needs, and various behavioural and emotional challenges. I firmly believe in the potential of every young person I work with, and alongside addressing their educational needs, I focus on instilling confidence and fostering positive self-talk, helping them to reflect on themselves in a constructive way.

In addition to providing personalised support, I have also delivered lessons in SEN schools and PRUs, and I ran my own drama sessions as part of the weekly school timetable. These sessions were incredibly beneficial for the young people, and I enjoyed seeing them thrive in a creative environment. Furthermore, I have experience as a cover supervisor in secondary schools, where I taught a wide range of subjects.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach is grounded in a strengths-based philosophy, which focuses on identifying and leveraging the unique talents and capabilities of each student. I believe that every young person has inherent strengths that can be harnessed to foster academic success and personal growth.

To ensure that my teaching is effective and relevant, I carefully prepare for each lesson, tailoring it specifically to meet the individual needs, preferences, and learning styles of the child. My personalised approach enables me to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel valued and understood.

Adaptability is a key aspect of my method. While I come to each session with a clear plan, I remain responsive to the dynamics of the session. I am happy and able to adjust my teaching strategies as necessary, facilitating a pace that is comfortable for each student. I am attuned to the cues and signals that indicate whether a student is ready for more or needs additional support, to ensure that learning remains both rewarding and enjoyable.

My overarching goal is to ensure academic success while promoting a positive self-image in my students. I strive to create a nurturing atmosphere where students feel fully supported, celebrated for their achievements, and empowered to take on challenges. Leaving each session feeling proud and confident is just as important to me as the academic progress they make.

By focusing on strengths and maintaining a flexible approach, I aim to cultivate not only knowledgeable students but also happy and self-assured individuals who are equipped to tackle their learning journey with enthusiasm and resilience.
