Since starting tutoring four years ago I have had a 100% success rate with my GCSE students all gaining the required grades to enter the sixth form or their chosen training course. I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Maths teaching (second subject) and have passed an Open University Level 2 Course in 'Developing Mathematical Thinking'. This concentrated on the most effective ways of teaching Maths.
I have taught in secondary schools for over twenty five years. I have been a Special Needs Coordinator and Head of Department in a Grammar School. I have also taught in an outstanding Comprehensive and an Independent School. In addition to Maths; I have taught A Level Philosophy and Religious Studies in which a logical approach is a vital skill.
My strengths lie in helping students who are not confident in the subject or who have missed out a stage in their Maths education. My approach is to re-establish basics, to begin with concrete examples and to spend as much time as necessary on each stage, before progressing to the next. I like to use real life examples rather than asking students to complete reams of exercises and to encourage understanding and problem solving. I believe anyone can 'do Maths' and want to remove the mystique from what is essentially a logical subject that can make sense to everyone.
