I am an experienced higher level teaching assistant and have worked for 20 years at both primary and secondary schools. I have a 1st class honours degree in Psychology, which has been really useful in understanding how memory, perception and processing affects young people with a range of difficulties.
I have worked with young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SCLN), Development Language Disorder, Autism, Dyslexia, Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Global Delay.
I have also helped children with anger issues, behavioural difficulties and lack of self-esteem.
I have worked with children from many different backgrounds and cultures and am sensitive to the way these may affect a young person's learning.
I believe that individual tuition can be really empowering for young people with SEN, as lessons at school can often move too fast for them to process. I make sure that my tuition is tailored to the needs of each young person, whether this is trying to reinforce classroom learning or teaching strategies for managing social situations.
I have been working one to one with students for many years in school settings. I have also worked with students in small groups. I have worked with children at Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4. I am currently tutoring and mentoring a range of young people.
For the past six years I have been specialising in Speech, Language and Communication. There are four main elements to this:
A wide vocabulary, an understanding of sentence structure, an understanding of narrative and social skills.
Many SEN students find these areas tricky regardless of whether they have a SLC need, particularly young people with autism.
I take each young person as an individual. It will take time to get to know your child and to see their strengths and weaknesses.
I believe it is important take a holistic approach. This means seeing your child as part of their environment – home, school, social time, hobbies. All these factors help to make up who they are and how they interact with other people.
I am patient, a good listener and sensitive to individual needs. I believe that praise is an integral part of enabling a young person to achieve. I also think that it helps if your child and I set targets together as having a good relationship is key to making a success of tutoring. I am a dedicated, conscientious and positive person and I will work hard to help your child to the best of my ability.
My aim is to increase your child's self-belief and self-esteem through a better understanding of themselves as well as helping them at an academic level. To do this, I use a wide range of resources including educational games.
If you think I can help your child, please contact me for a no obligation chat.
