I am a Cambridge University law graduate with a history of multidisciplinary excellence, attaining A*A*A in my French, History and Maths A-Levels. Since graduating in 2023, I have been working as a maths teacher at a state comprehensive in south Essex, though intend on resuming my law studies this September with a Master’s at UCL.
I have taught maths since September 2023 as part of the Teach First scheme, attaining QTS in summer 2024. As part of my job, I have been responsible for small group teaching of higher-tier Y11 maths students, and have a foundation Y10 class of my own. I have also engaged in small-group and one-to-one tutoring with Y8 students as part of our extra-curricular program. Outside of the school, I have tutored maths privately, mainly for primary-age students.
I maintain a very warm approach, but ensure that it is backed with high effort expectations. I have engaged with a lot of the literature around maths teaching, and have thus developed a quite robust structure for a learning episodes, based on Barton’s model. This is rooted firmly in ‘explicit instruction’, with keen use of carefully-worded and -modelled explanations, providing opportunities for metacognitive reinforcement. Following this, I adhere to a ‘variation theory’ model of task design before moving onto problem questions. This learning episode model ensures that the student is able to move smoothly from first introduction to a concept to, ultimately, being able to apply that concept to complex exam-style questions.
