As an experienced Maths teacher and tutor I have worked in a number of education settings, teaching students from a wide range of backgrounds and with different levels of prior academic attainment. I am passionate about education and believe that all students can thrive if provided with the right support.
I have significant experience living and working with young people who have additional needs and this informs my practice, ensuring that I provide a safe learning environment for all learners to become confident mathematicians.
In my free time I enjoy motorcycling, walking, reading and spending time with my family. I am also a keen potter and spend a lot of time in my studio working with clay and developing my skills both on the wheel and hand building.
Since qualifying as a teacher in 2009 I have gained experience working in a number of state and private schools in the UK. I am a passionate and reflective practitioner and over the years have held posts of responsibility including Head of KS3, Lead Teacher and Head of Maths.
I have experience of both living and working with young people who have additional needs, particularly ASC, ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia and OCD. This experience has enabled me to welcome all students in to my classroom in a non-judgemental and adaptive way regardless of their additional needs. I am able to utilise the skills I have developed as a teacher and a parent to ensure that all students feel they are in a safe learning environment where there is no such thing as a "stupid question". Although it is lovely to have a page of work that is correct, I am more interested in the questions where students have made errors as this is an learning opportunity and allows students further develop their understanding of the topic.
I have a very flexible approach to teaching and learning, always responding to the needs of the individual that I am working with. Maths is a subject that is so easy to hate if you find it challenging, and the biggest barrier to learning is a lack of confidence.
It is always my aim build confidence in students, enabling them to become proficient mathematicians. This in turn allows them to take intellectual risks and become more comfortable when tackling more complex mathematical concepts.
I am passionate about providing an inclusive education and enabling all individuals to achieve regardless of their starting point.
