I am a cheerful and dynamic tutor, with an MEng & ACGI Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London and currently working in Medical Devices.
My final year key modules include: Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Computational Continuum Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics and Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.
From past volunteering events, I get along well with kids and love engaging and inspiring their interest in STEM.
Hobbies and Interests:
Sports (taekwondo, snowboarding, swimming), Music (piano, ukulele/guitar), Cooking/Baking, Coding
Parmiter's School, tutoring year 7-9 maths during their class.
Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School, tutoring GCSE maths once a week, one-to-three students. After a few months, one moved up a set, improving from a C grade to an A.
I can use imaginative analogies to explain questions, and relate problems to their area of interest to spark their interest and help maintain focus for students who find STEM disinteresting - this can enable them to be aware of their own potential too.
As a passionate engineer, I promote the application of knowledge to my students, and encourage them to ask as many questions as possible, even beyond the subject area. As such, I like to work with my students as opposed to lecturing or reading out of a textbook. When students learn to tackle problems, it helps them build confidence and gain independence for their exams. Dynamic interactions also help memorizing approaches or techniques to understanding and answering questions.
From Lleras and Ariga's research in Cognition and Experimental Brain Research, and data from DeskTime, I structure each tutoring session to be 52 mins, and adapt the number and duration of breaks to different students, for better concentration and productivity during the session. Generally, I recommend a 52 mins session and 17 mins break, followed by 21 mins of independent work with supervision (as an observer also improves productivity and quality of work) or more questions at the end.
