I am a qualified teacher and mother of two adult daughters. I have worked as a home tutor for over 40 years in my own home and online. I now only offer online tuition using Zoom as a teaching platform. Using Zoom allows both the teacher and the student to see and talk to each other, access, show and annotate relevant webpages and our work and write on an online whiteboard. All teaching materials, homework tasks and screenshots taken during the lesson are saved and then emailed to the student.
I have a first degree, a masters degree and a PGCE qualification in Modern Languages but retrained to teach Mathematics. I am a Level 5 Maths Specialist with an updated advanced Mathematics qualification from Southampton University. I offer this subject to GCSE level. Until 2020 I was working as a Year 5 Primary School teacher, focusing on Maths, English, IT, French and German. I also worked as a one-to-one tutor at a local middle school.
I have worked as a home tutor for over 40 years, and have extensive experience in schools, colleges and adult learning. As a home tutor, I have taught Primary Maths and English, for SATs and 11+ entrance exams, lower secondary Maths, GCSE Maths, German and French and Adult Maths. I have taught ICT, English and Maths at college and to adult Learndirect learners and have also supported adults with specific learning needs, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. I have worked in a number of different secondary schools as a teacher of German and French and also ran a successful German Department for 7 years. I was combining my home tuition work with my part-time job as a KS2/KS3 1:1 and small group Middle School Maths Tutor, but from February 2020 I have worked just as a self-employed Home Tutor. From September 2025 I will be offering only online lessons using Zoom as a teaching platform.
Before I start to tutor, I will always find out what the parent and/or tutee hopes to achieve through the lessons with me, whether this is to pass an exam, improve in confidence, go up a set in school, understand a particular area of the subject, or all of these. I also find out what particular methods of learning the tutee prefers. For example, many students enjoy games and computer activities to aid their learning.
My students and I enjoy the lessons and they invariably gain in confidence, and most often achieve their targets.
