I am an animated, hardworking and enthusiastic individual who is committed to helping young people succeed. I am a highly experienced English secondary school teacher who has worked with students from 11 years of age to 18 years old covering a wide range of abilities. I have prepared students for the rigours of the GCSE English Language and Literature exams for 25 years and have had excellent results - from helping students who desperately need a 4 to students who are achieving 8s and 9s. Additionally, I have taught A Level English Literature for 25 years and have had students achieve As and A* grades. I attribute my good results to fostering sound relationships with young people and injecting humour into my lessons making it fun to learn.
I have taught in a number of different schools working with SEN students, students who have behavioural and emotional issues as well as those who are neurodiverse and/or have ADHD. I have taught many high ability students and therefore am fully equipped to tutor young people of any ability. I have had held positions of responsibility for GCSE and A Level in the schools I have worked in. I have also taught abroad.
I make lessons fun and have used role play to enable students to access ideas in literary texts. I do many recap quizzes to check learning and understanding from lesson to lesson. Recall is highly important. I make this quick paced and stimulating, asking probing questions; I have been praised for this by Ofsted. I listen carefully to children's needs and questions and find ways of breaking down challenging material so it's accessible and comprehensible. I know the demands of examinations and have a number of strategies to ensure a child understands and succeeds. Self confidence and boosting a child's self esteem is essential for this.
