I am currently working as a year 5 teacher, I have a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield a PGDE and a Master in Education from the University of Birmingham, following a PhD in synthetic biology at the University of Edinburgh. I am up to date with the current theories and methods in teaching. My background is in agriculture and microbiology. I have been a peer mentor for the durations of my degrees for A level students and specifically students completing the baccalaureate and regularly give science talks in local schools. I am a fully verified and DBS checked ambassador with STEMNet.
I am able to offer tutoring in biology and some areas of chemistry (biochemistry). I am also able to provide access to equipment such as microscopes, telescopes and plant and bacterial culture equipment, not usually available to schools. I am also currently learning BSL (British Sign Language) and Makaton so I can also work with deaf pupils and those with learning difficulties.
I have taught for 16 years with experience teaching all years in Primary and secondary schools from KS2 to A level. I have worked with disadvantaged young people as a peer mentor for seven years. I have supervised under graduate and masters students research projects and taken undergraduate classes for nutrition lectures. I have also worked with primary school pupils in expanding their vocabulary and English skills when we have designed "experiments" in sessions. I understand how break down large words for pronunciation and can explain complex concepts in a way the pupils can understand.
I can also offer guidance for UCAS applications and personal statements.
I find that posing a question about the topic we are covering and then guiding the pupil towards the answer far more effective than simply drumming facts in. This approach helps develop critical thinking in the pupil which are vital in higher education.
As you have to buy my details to contact me I can offer a discount on your first session (which seems fair to me) so your first session is £37.50, to cover my travel costs.
