I have a passion for teaching and learning in general, and particularly in Mathematics. I firmly believe that everyone can learn even the most complex concepts if they are broken down to suit a student's individual level of understanding. An expert in the foundational concepts of numeracy, I spent a year as an adviser/consultant, training primary educators to identify and fix mathematical misunderstandings, allowing their students to access the full curriculum and achieve success.
I am married with three children, and believe that a sense of fun, coupled with unerring focus on rigour and competence, is the key to my philosophy of successful learning.

Tutoring Experience

A Mathematics teacher of 18 years experience, I currently lead on Mathematics in one of the highest performing schools in Scotland. I have worked for over ten years on a consultancy basis for the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) as a marker and creator of national assessments.
I have worked as a consultant for an EdTech start-up, working mainly on the creating resources and assessments for the various mathematical curricula in the UK and have a deep familiarity with these, as well as IB and other international qualifications.

NATIONAL 5/GCSE/IGCSE/HIGHER/A-LEVEL
I have extensive experience in preparing students from all backgrounds for formal examinations from several examination boards and pride myself on achieving excellent grades from every student. Whether you are feeling that you are failing and need a clear road-map to success, or are looking to score an A* grade, I can provide the models and guidance to get exceptional results.

PRIMARY STUDENTS
I have extensive expertise in teaching primary students, and their teachers, numeracy and mathematics. I can help to prepare pupils for entrance assessments, or develop their numeracy skills and unlock further stages of mathematics that ensure success and build confidence.

HOMESCHOOLING
Mathematics can be a daunting subject to homeschool. Key to my approach is building confidence in the ability of parents, and then pupils.

ADULT LEARNERS
Many adults have had a bad experience of mathematics at school, and it stands in their way as they try to access a new career. I have successfully tutored adults online to their first mathematics qualification, and opened the door to their new career.
From a client: "I had only ever failed Maths and hated it, after a few sessions, Craig made me realise that I could do it! He broke it down so well that I achieved an A grade...and I like Maths now!"

Tutoring Approach

My approach centres on the observation that most students' difficulties in Mathematics come from insufficient direct instruction, worked examples and step-by-step guidance in the basic concepts.

Usually, a tutorial with me would involve clear, careful, and concise instruction using clear worked examples to improve core knowledge. Students will also complete examples under my supervision so that I can catch errors quickly as we work together.

I focus on achieving substantial progress in a few sessions to motivate students and build their confidence so they become more independent.

I believe that it is vital to build a rapport with students, so that their learning is enjoyable, and even more so that successful learning is enjoyable.
