Friendly and reliable tutor with a PhD in biology, specialising in moths.
Although insects are my main passion in life, I am interested in all aspects of biology. I am proud to admit that I think maths is super fun and I hope I can convince more people to love it!
I studied ecology and conservation in Cornwall and did my PhD at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire. I was looking mainly at long-term changes in British moth populations. I am also an artist, I travel a lot, play the piano (although not as much as I would like to) and I am an improving intermediate Spanish speaker that practices every day.
I tutored both maths and biology at GCSE level during my PhD. I have also taught Spanish in an informal setting.
In addition to tutoring, I have taught in many other roles. For example, training people to survey frogs and reptiles in Madagascar and teaching people to identify British ground beetles with a microscope. I have also taught English to indigenous people in Ecuador.
I focus on getting my students to have a good conceptual understanding of the subject so that the memorisation aspects come more naturally.
I identify where the weak spots in my students' understanding lie and find ways of explaining things from different perspectives.
