I am a specialist Sociology teacher with huge experience and expertise built up over a 20-year teaching career at sixth form level. My teaching philosophy aims to deliver not only high grades and major, measurable improvement in student performance but also an enjoyable experience.
In addition to 20 years of sixth form teaching, I have considerable experience of tutoring both sixth formers and mature students on a one-to-one basis. The exam board whose syllabus I have taught in recent years is the AQA and the main topics covered include ‘Families and Households’, ‘Education’, ‘Research Methods’, ‘Crime and Deviance’, ‘Beliefs in Society’ and ‘Theory and Methods’. Crucially, my students have an excellent record of examination success both as sixth form students and individual tutees.
In terms of qualifications, I hold a doctorate / PhD, an MA at distinction level, a PGCE teaching qualification (specialising in post-16 education) and a BA (Hons).
My teaching style emphasises the need to be accessible, friendly and supportive and to build a relationship with students which prioritises the learning goals they themselves identify as well as the understandings and skills needed to achieve high grades. I also favour an interactive approach which recognises that learning needs to generate enthusiasm and engagement as well as academic progress. Most importantly, I teach to ensure students understand and can meet examination assessment objectives and thereby achieve high grades.
