My name is Daniel. I completed a BA in French and Philosophy at University College London before pursuing an MPhil in Modern European Philosophy. I achieved a distinction in both degrees and will shortly be starting a PhD. My personal research interests lie in the history of philosophy however I offer tuition on a broad range of subjects across philosophy and beyond.
I have several years’ experience providing one-on-one tuition, working with students from GCSE to bachelor’s level in order to provide support with coursework and exams. I am therefore familiar with the various exam boards used throughout the UK and can guide students through the (occasionally daunting!) university admissions process.
The advantage of individual tuition is that each lesson can address the individual needs and interests of each student. I find that this flexibility keeps students engaged in the subject and facilitates an in-depth understanding of the topic at hand. Through sustained discussion, I encourage students to develop their own response to questions and texts by thinking through the implications of their own position and assessing alternative, competing positions.
I structure blocks of lessons according to the goals of each student. In tandem with students, we identify a series of goals which will orient the lessons and organise our time from there. In practice, this has tended to entail targeting specific areas of a syllabus, identifying and discussing the significant topics/themes/questions, and finally equipping the student with the appropriate essay-writing tools.
In addition to the materials for each lesson, I’m happy to offer suggestions for further study beyond the course materials and recommend reading which exceeds the given level. I also provide essay writing tutorials (with a focus on clarity, argumentation and style) and interview practice, as needed.
