I am a friendly and personable biology teacher who has been teaching science at a GCSE and advanced level since 2007.

I currently teach A level biology at a sixth form college and have previously taught all 3 three sciences to GCSE level as head of KS4 in my previous school.

Tutoring Experience

As a currently employed biology teacher i have extensive understanding of required knowledge and skills to gain good grades at A-level.
I have additionally also taught GCSE chemistry and physics as well as biology whilst head of KS4 at a secondary school in the area.
As well as the experience teaching GCSE's and A levels i have many years experience teaching the vocational BTEC Applied Science at level 2 and level 3.
I have worked with hundreds of pupils in my years as a teacher. Not only do I support pupils within the classroom by facilitating their learning using a variety of methods and approaches I also support pupils individually beyond the classroom. I carry out extensive subject and learning support sessions with select pupils on a more individual basis where we improve either subject knowledge or study skills.
Since COVID hit I have become skilled at delivering A level content online. As my role of A level biology teacher I have been offering blended learning and exclusive online learning during lockdowns. As a tutor I have made use of Microsoft teams and zoom so that I could continue supporting my tutees electronically so that they felt best prepared to approach the assessments their colleges were going to put into place to generate 'Teacher assessed grades'. I have greatly enjoyed tutoring online and felt that I was able to make use of resources that an in person tutoring session might not best suit and am happy to continue offering it as a service going forward.

Tutoring Approach

I aim to adjust each session to cater for each learners individual needs and deliver a personalised session to the tutee. Our first session together we will allow me to learn what your aims for the sessions are and build a personalised learning experience for you from there.

I believe it is important to build tutees confidence with the concepts and theory as set out by the exam board and then move on to applying that knowledge to exam questions. Many students believe that their main area of weakness is the exam skills and whilst these skills often do need developing, often what is missing is the core understanding of the biological theory and terminology. My aim is to build up students knowledge bank and vocabulary first, whilst simultaneously helping them develop study skills which they can then use independently. Once secure with their knowledge we can then begin to look at how these concepts can be applied to exam questions. Sessions will build skills in decoding exam questions and creating answers that use subject specific language using previous mark schemes to become familiar with this language.

A/A* grades are achieved by demonstrating high levels of analysis and evaluation using knowledge of the subject in unfamiliar contexts and through practice exam questions and support we will develop these skills.
