David

Hi, I'm David, a dedicated geography tutor with a passion for making the subject come alive for my students. I currently teach Geography to KS3-5 at Dulwich College, one of the UK's top independent secondary schools and help to lead on the provision of A Level and GCSE courses. I've taught many different syllabuses and am also an examiner, so know exactly what the examination boards are looking for in order for you to succeed! I graduated with a First-Class Degree from the University of Reading, where I was top of my cohort, and I hold a PGCE in Secondary Geography with Qualified Teacher Status. Right now, I'm enhancing my leadership and mentoring skills by completing the National Professional Qualification in Leading Teaching at UCL.

I have a deep love for physical geography, especially coastal environments, fluvial studies, glaciation, deserts, climate change, and physical processes. I'm also the Master in charge of The Geography Society, where I inspire students to explore geography beyond the classroom. Before this, I worked as the Head Ambassador for the University of Reading’s Geography and Environmental Science Department, where I developed a strong background in youth development.

Tutoring is a special skill that I believe is different from classroom teaching.

Tutoring Experience

Over the past five years, I have mentored and privately tutored students (totalling 400+ hours), all of whom achieved top grades in their exams (all 9s at GCSE and A* at A Level), showcasing my commitment to student success. With a specialisation in physical geography topics such as coastal environments, glaciation, deserts, climate change, physical processes, and the atmosphere, I bring depth and enthusiasm to my teaching. My experience spans various exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, and Cambridge International Education.

As the leader of the Geography Department's domestic and international trip provision, I have designed and led enrichment and fieldwork trips to locations like Lanzarote for volcanism, Barcelona for enrichment activities, Brussels for A Level fieldwork, and Gredos National Park for glaciation and hydrology studies. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I serve as an examiner for the AQA GCSE Geography exam board and mentor for the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - all studnets I have mentored have received A* grades. I am also the Master in charge of The Geography Society, where I foster a love for geography beyond the classroom - if you need a tutor or mentor for UCAS, exam technique or the EPQ, you're in safe hands.

Testimonials - Mrs RG: We were very fortunate to have David as a tutor for our daughter for her GCSE. Following her mock exams, she had a 6 and we were in a late panic to help her. In the short time available, David started tutoring her. His approach was focused, clear and organised and enabled her to gain knowledge and confidence. She enjoyed her sessions and always felt they were useful. We were delighted that she gained a 9 in her GCSE, which was all down to David's help.

Tutoring Approach

I believe the key to helping students exceed their potential is to create an engaging, secure, and comfortable learning environment, both in person and online. My passion for geography shines through in my teaching, using stories and experiences to make lessons vibrant and focused on student goals. I strive to captivate and motivate students, fostering both academic and social development.

I offer comprehensive support with exam revision, study plans, and essay structure to maximise grades. I also mentor students on university-level essays, reports, and presentations, ensuring strong research and writing skills while meeting assignment requirements. My dissertation supervision focuses on providing strong communication, organisation, and continuous support.

I pride myself on being available 24/7 and offering a service well beyond the level of regular tutors. This includes support for parents as well, as I believe tutoring involves three participants: myself, the student, and the parent/guardian. I'm always on hand to offer advice, reassurance, or even direct intervention with schools or teachers if needed.

I tailor my tutoring to each student’s needs, identifying key areas for improvement and teaching with patience and adaptability. Whether you need help with specific content, exam techniques, or understanding command words, I focus on your learning style to ensure effective support.

In addition to academic support, I teach essential study skills as part of my lessons. This includes a tailored essay structure programme and a personalised revision programme for exam season.

My goal is to help you achieve the highest grade possible while developing a passion for geography. When you enjoy studying, you achieve better results. I look forward to working with you! If you have any questions or specific learning requirements, please get in touch, and I’ll do my best to assist.
