David is a pleasant tutor who is obviously passionate about his subject.
However, when my son presented a past paper he did, David took over an hour to work out, (whilst speaking his thoughts out loud) the answers to three questions worth 1, 2 and 3 marks respectively - with my son sitting quietly watching and listening. At the end, David told my son to check the answer with his teacher at college.
The lesson went over by 30 minutes but David did not charge extra, which was kind of him.
However, my son needs support with speed of response, and works better with a more interactive teaching style; I'm afraid this is not what he received in this first lesson.
Let's put this in context. Yes I could have given the student very quick answers to the questions. This would have been absolutely worthless to him because it would not have shown him how to do such questions in the future. So, I gave him detailed instructions for two completely different methods that would enable him to tackle future questions. One of these methods is a very important (and simple) way of balancing redox reactions, which hardly any school teaches its students. Likewise the other method works well with any sort of equation, and is also seldom taught. The student was completely unaware of both these methods!
As for the part I told the student to check with his teacher, this was because the question itself was WRONG! It did not correctly describe what one would have seen in the proposed experiment. To account for the observed observations I suggested another likely reaction, and part of the (overrun) time was me trying to find either possible reaction in the numerous textbooks I have to hand: for the student's benefit.
Most of my lessons tend to overrun, because I don't watch the clock, and most students really appreciate not being kicked out the moment their hour is up.
Of course I speak my thoughts out loud while solving a problem that a student has asked me to help them with. That's so that a student can note the line of reasoning that leads to the solution. As for "speed of response", this is the very last thing that most students want. Most want to fully understand how they can get answers to similar problems by themselves.
The student is was carefully shown two very valuable techniques which most students find extremely helpful. Unfortunately, as is true with almost everything in life, worthwhile learning, and consolidating it properly, takes a little time.
My teaching record speaks for itself, with many of my students getting very good grades and going to the very best universities. Some even come back for occasional help with their university coursework.

David was efficient and flexible when arranging the first lesson. On arrival David was friendly and put me at ease. My son was happy with the tutoring and even on the first lesson learnt a better method of solving his questions. I feel my son will benefit from being tutored by David and get the results that he needs.
Thanks for the feedback. It's always nice to know that students have benefited from their time with me.

My son, needed help for his A Level Physics so settled upon you for tutoring. At first glance on your profile, it was particularly warming to see your desire to help many students. So I believed you was the perfect tutor for my son.
However upon arrival, what stood out to me was the area in which tutoring took place- it was unusually dim and the inadequate amount of lighting made for an unsuitable studying environment. Also the style in which you tutor was not to what my son was expecting. He said he did not prefer your passive ways of your teaching style. Therefore, he did not believe he would make significant progress with you. My son's concerns over these issues made me come to the decision that we cannot continue further.
Thank you for your time,
The comment about the area being unusually dim is complete nonsense. The room was recently decorated, with a white lustrous wall paper, white ceiling, and a carpet that isn't dark. At each end of the room there are TWO lights. I tutored the son at one end, and the father was sitting DIRECTLY under the lights at the other.
The REAL reason for ending the tuition is that the boy is LAZY and looking for an EASY FIX. He showed me a physics paper which was smothered in red by his teacher, but had taken the attitude that having merely been informed of his mistakes he wouldn't make them again. Like similar students it was very clear that he was looking for a quick and easy way to avoid the hard slog needed to be able to answer the parts of the paper that required him to write good explanations. I also suspect that farther and son were extremely annoyed to be told, after they had asked, that he couldn't email me between sessions for FREE extra help.
Actually the ONLY reason, in private, that the father gave me (at very short notice) for stopping was that he didn't want to drive his son to me, and now wanted someone to come to his home. As I pointed out to his father the boy could have easily made his own way to me.
All the other reviews clearly show, hard working and serious students, of ALL abilities, really appreciate (and benefit from) my tutoring.

Very pleased with David. We feel confident that my son is getting the best possible help with Chemistry.
Many thanks for your vote of confidence. As a matter of principle I never solicit reviews, but I do appreciate those that I do get.

David is an excellent tutor, I would recommend him. He has helped my 16 year old son with his Maths a/s level and I will be asking him for help again next academic year. Thank you David.
Thank you for your recommendation Jane. These days, when so many schools are letting their students down very badly, it's satisfying to be able to have the opportunity to make a difference.
