I am a full-time professional maths and physics tutor and homeschool teacher with 10 years experience. I have worked with over a hundred students in one-to-one or small group settings helping them achieve and exceed their desired grades. My main areas of expertise are the new GCSE and A Level exams and working with students with specific learning difficulties. As well as private tutoring, I provide bespoke homeschooling in maths and physics up to A Level. I recently homeschooled a severely dyslexic student (requiring a reader and scribe for examinations) in A Level maths who was awarded an A*.
I have a degree in Physics from Imperial College London and worked in engineering before becoming a full-time tutor. I'm also interested in psychology and have an MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies from UCL.
I am a member of the Tutors' Association and abide by their code of ethics and professional practice. I also am a member of Qualified Tutor, an organisation that aims to maintain high standards within the tutoring industry by providing professional training.
I'm dedicated to continuing professional development and maintaining the highest tutoring standards. I have completed trainings in mental health awareness, safeguarding, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and have completed a training course in Maths Anxiety through the University of Derby.
I'm a fluent Welsh speaker and can teach maths and physics through the medium of Welsh.
I have worked as a private tutor for over 10 years and have over 9000 hours of tutoring experience. I have worked with people of all ages and abilities, including primary school children, adolescents, adult learners and students with special educational needs and differences. I have helped dozens of students get their desired grades at GCSE and A Level. I have also work as a homeschool teacher, delivering the full A Level Maths curriculum as the sole teacher to a severely dyslexic student (requiring a reader and a scribe for examinations). This student received an A* in maths in the 2022 A Level exams.
As part of a local authority initiative, I worked with a group of excluded pupils, preparing them for their GCSEs outside of the traditional school setting. I also ran a program for more able and talented pupils at a primary school.
Over the years I have worked with children with a range of special education needs, including dyslexia (including those who require a reader and scribe for examinations), dyspraxia, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders. I have also worked with foster children and children with behavioural difficulties.
Outside of education I am also interested in mental health and psychology and have volunteered at a mental health charity as a support worker and completed two foundation courses in psychotherapy. As such I am sensitive to issues of mental health in children and adolescents, and the stress and emotional difficulties that exams and educational pressure can provoke.
I have experience with the following exams and exam boards:
Maths: KS2, KS3, GCSE (Edexcel, AQA, WJEC, OCR), IGCSE (Edexcel, AQA), A
Level (Edexcel, AQA, WJEC, OCR MEI).
Physics: KS3, GCSE (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC), IGCSE (Edexcel), A Level (Edexcel, AQA, WJEC).
Entrance and other exams: MAT Test (Mathematics entrance exam for Oxford and Imperial College), UKiset, Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) Oxford, QTS tests.
I have a proven record of getting results and significant improvement from my students and references and testimonials can be provided to testify to this.
Here are a few testimonials from satisfied clients:
"Dewi has been an incredible Maths tutor for my son. He was lacking in confidence and struggling with new concepts after a patchy period of maths education during the pandemic. Dewi teaches in a very calm, kind and gentle manner and has just filled my son with confidence. This term he has flown into top set at school and is now on track for a 9 at GCSE. We couldn’t ’t be happier" Sophie
"Dewi has been vital to my success in passing and further more achieving a B grade in my A level math exam. With only 3 months to teach me all the content for the exams, he did an excellent job of covering all the content while not overwhelming me. Dewi always knew the answer my questions, regardless of whether he was teaching me that specific topic at the moment, which shows his deep understanding of the underlying concepts. He also explained the questions in a succinct and understandable manner. Furthermore, Dewi is really invested in each of his students as he is willing to change his schedule and work late hours to accommodate extra lessons." Christiaan
"I would, as a parent, like to recommend Dewi most highly as one-on-one math A-level tutor. His conduct is highly professional, he is always punctual, and he has a real gift for understanding what the student is not grasping and making it clear.
His regular feedback to me was also very helpful." Marinda

“I contacted Dewi to help us with our son who is having a hard time getting to grips with his A level maths. Dewi was very quick to respond to my text messages and he was able to make a quick appointment to help our son get through his resit. My son was more upbeat after having the hour with Dewi and he seems to be getting to grips with the maths now, so we are still currently using Dewi as he has been a great help, very pleasant and great with our son. I would definitely recommend Dewi to any struggling student, or concerned parent.” ★;;★;;★;;★;;★;;

“We decided to employ a home tutor for our son for GCSE Mathematics to enable him to reach the necessary grades required for him to continue his education at college. Dewi was willing to come to our home on a weekly basis until the examinations. He was courteous, always on time, and had a lot of patience. His support and way of teaching suited our son, he explained mathematical problems clearly ensuring that our son understood every step, and provided dedicated individual attention. Our son had no hesitation in asking any questions. He was obviously very knowledgeable in his subject areaThis resulted in an increase in our son' confidence in mathematics which affected his learning, his grades increased significantly in a short period of time. One important contribution from Dewi was the provision of supplementary notes which summarised information that our son could easily revise and increase his understanding. Our son passed his examinations successfully which we are sure would not be the case if not for him. We are really grateful to Dewi for his input and would recommend him without any hesitation to any other parent or student.” Lona
“Dewi always came on time and was quite flexible if he or we couldn’t make a day for him. By week 2, Bailey was very much at ease with him and always looked forward to the lessons. Dewi worked on the areas that Bailey was the weakest in or didn’t understand and even went over the whole structure of the syllabus with him and provided all the formulas for every topic in maths which came very handy. Homework was given regularly in the form of past papers and any errors that were made in the answers, Dewi would explain them and give him more questions in that particular area to get right. Bailey was tutored right up to the day of the 1st exam paper and in between the 2nd one. After the long wait, a C grade was achieved and we told Dewi the news. Bailey was saying at the time that he thought the exam paper seemed easier and felt quite confident because he remembered all the important points that Dewi told him.
There’s not a large age gap between Dewi and Bailey so communication between them was an important factor and as a result Bailey knew what Dewi was looking for in the answers to get the marks, he never felt embarrassed if he still didn’t understand the question and there was growing confidence in Bailey in understanding maths. With passing his exams a few years earlier, Dewi knows all the tips and know-how of the subject to pass onto the student to achieve the desired grade. When Dewi contacted me about his plans to move to London, I was disappointed with the timing as my daughter wanted tuition from him yet so pleased for him with all the opportunities waiting for him there.
I would recommend Dewi to any student as they will be very lucky to have him and he will make sure they get the grade but they will have to put in the hard work too. ” Aileen
“My son started year 10 GCSE Physics with very little confidence and we were worried that he would get ‘left behind’ and never catch up. Dewi instantly formed a rapport with my son providing positive encouragement and immediately identifying the problem areas and explaining things in a calm, reasoned and patient manner. Having the ability to ask questions on a one to one basis outside the more formal classroom structure really helped my son to rationalize things and to grasp the principals and to apply these to sample exam questions. My son improved from a probable D/E standard to B in his GCSE, which he and we were really pleased with. In year 11 we also asked Dewi to provide GCSE mathematics tutoring as my son needed to gain a grade B for his college course and was only on course for a C. Again, Dewi’s tutoring proved invaluable and the required B grade was achieved.
I cannot recommend Dewi highly enough, so much so that my son actually looked forward to his visits, something I never thought I would be able to say about a teenage boy having extra tuition!
I’m sure that the support provided by Dewi has opened up many more opportunities and choices for my son that probably would not have been available without his help” John
“Dewi worked with our daughter in the run-up to her exams as she had totally lost her confidence. His calm, patient and encouraging approach put her at her ease. No answer was silly, but a point for exposition. I would really recommend Dewi as our daughter achieved A in both the numeracy and Higher Maths papers Diolch yn fawr iawn Dewi.” Jane
"Dewi, tutored my daughter in maths. They worked through the syllabus at her pace and he (in her words) magically made it all clear. I as the parent would highly recommend Dewi as a tutor he showed a great professional attitude while giving my daughter great confidence and understanding." Maxine
"I would highly recommend Dewi as a tutor. He tutored my son on math and physics for his GCSEs. Dewi always came prepared and would take the time to go through any topic that my son did not understand, he would always find the right strategy to explain the more difficult topics. He would even do research and send my son online videos with several different explanations to make sure that my son was prepared for his exams." Tala
I approach all my students as individuals with their own unique set of interests, attitudes and strengths and I always tailor the sessions the specific needs of the student. I tend to make the sessions fairly informal and engaging and aim to really pique the student's interest in the subject, which makes the learning process a lot easier.
For me, the priority is to cultivate a deep understanding of the subject, enabling the student to tackle complex ideas and to solve problems. This not only provides confidence going into exams but also gives a solid foundation for their next level of study. However, I am a pragmatic tutor and will also help to maximise exam performance and provide the student with all the information they'll need to prepare for any upcoming exams.
Years of experience have taught me how to develop a good, trusting relationship with a student whilst also challenging them and encouraging them to learn independently.
Over the past two years, I've read extensively on cognitive science and educational research and have implemented the advice of those at the cutting edge of the field, structuring my lessons and programs to maximise long-term learning and exam performance. Since doing this, I have seen faster and more significant improvements in my student's learning.
If you would like to know more about the tutoring process please send me a message, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.
