My name is Elena and I have just graduated from University of St. Andrews with a First Class Degree in Economics. I have completed MRes Economics, at University of Glasgow in September 2019 and currently on maternity leave.
Having secured a scholarship, I moved to Scotland almost eleven years ago to complete my high school education and therefore I am aware of the Scottish educational system. Having taken a variety of subjects at Higher and Advanced Higher level, I decided to focus on my strengths - combining my quantitative skills and analytical thinking in an economics degree. Throughout my degree I have developed a wide range of valuable academic skills, participated in a number of research programmes and secured various internships at recognised companies
I consider myself a friendly, approachable and hard-working person, who is happy to share knowledge and experience to others.
When I was at boarding school, I used to help my younger flatmates with their Math courses. They were all at different age and level and therefore I could gain experience in different levels of the educational system. I have been tutoring Mathematics and Economics at Higher level for local high-school girl when I was third year at University of St. Andrews. I explained concepts that she did not understand in class, set similar questions for her to work and discussed past exam papers with her. All those that I have tutored improved significantly their understanding and achieved excellent grades in the relative subjects.
I have also been involved into a programme run by the School of Economics and the Economics Society where Honour students were tutoring sub-honours students in 1 to 1 lessons. It involved helping with challenging topics, harder tutorial questions and exam preparation. Previously, I have been working as a part-time graduate teaching assistant at the University of Glasgow. I delivered tutorials for first and second year students on weekly basis. My teaching style involves preparing complete answers to the students as well as encouraging discussion during our classes.
I strongly believe that individuals are different and each one requires an individual approach when it comes to tutoring. I would try to make the lessons as interactive as possible, and would try to engage the tutee in order for him/her to ask questions in areas he/she is unsure about. I am determined to move onto topics without ensuring that the previous concepts are well-understood as I believe that ideas build onto each other and are usually connected. That would make concepts easier to remember and knowledge more applicable. I would adapt to the needs of the person, depending on his level and needs.
I I think that in order to understand a concept fully, it not requires grasping the idea, but also practice.
