Private Physics and English (Foreign Language) Tutor in Woodbridge

British teacher of GCSE and A Level physics with 15 years' classroom experience. MSc physics, qualified English (EFL) teacher. Whether you're aiming for Oxbridge, troubleshooting or need to catch up on basics, together we'll build momentum for a great trajectory! IGCSE and IB specifications offered too.

Despite having taught hundreds of students, I am still continually astounded by the teenage potential for progress, once on track.

The key, of course, is practice. My job is to give you the confidence, insight and motivation to get going. Grab your calculator - you might even enjoy it!

I can drive to you but might need to charge for travel time from Grundisburgh, if significant.

Younger tutees are welcome. We can indulge curiosity and lay good foundations.

I'm a lover of language and I hope that students learning English will find me patient and logical. My pronunciation is standard "BBC" British (without local accent/dialect).

Tutoring Experience

11 years at Woodbridge School (Independent school, HMC) teaching physics and science to ages 12-18, GCSE and A Level.

4 years at King Edward VI School Bury St Edmunds (comprehensive) teaching physics 13-18, GCSE and A Level.

5 years teaching English as a foreign language, mostly in a business context at Berlitz language school in Oslo.

Tutoring Approach

From your individual startpoint, we aim for a positive spiral of increasing confidence and better results.

If you're an exam student, we will likely use the specification as an overview. We discuss each concept, then secure a basic mathematical method before progressing from simple to multi-stage problems. Often, it is useful to troubleshoot tricky questions which have already come up at school. This sometimes reveals an underlying gap or misconception, which we can tackle together. If you don't have homework to ask me about, I'll set some questions for you (from your exam board) so that we can go through it next time. This gives much better educational "value" than just turning up! There should be no big surprises in the final exam paper (just entertaining twists).

My explanations might involve asking you leading questions. I draw diagrams or pictures as we follow the logic together. I want you to build mental pictures in parallel with the equations.

I also offer an opportunity for conceptual discussion and delving into the mysteries of the Universe!

If you're learning English as a foreign language, we will check your current level and might select a course book. Some students will need essay practice for TEFL exams. Others may want conversation or business English. For most, some grammar will be introduced, gently.
