I have completed pre-clinical Medicine at the University of Dundee. I will undertake clinical training from September 2020. I hope to undertake postgraduate training and eventually practice in the US.
I have a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences, and an MSc in Biomedical Sciences Research. I have Enhanced Disclosure (completed as part of my application to medical school).
I have tutored in Dundee for the past 13 years, having tutored at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higer levels with pupils from state and private education. Please have a look at my feedback.
I have worked part-time as a tutor, for Best Tutors, located in East London. Subjects I tutored included sciences, upto A-Level in Biology and Chemistry; and maths upto GCSE (with support for AS level students in Pure Maths with Mechanics), 11+ and high school/independent/grammar school entrance exams. Having attended grammar school, my experience with verbal and non-verbal tests was exploited by the tutor centre, such that I have implemented and led classes that deal with tackling entrance exams, such as 11+, and middle school exams.
Being able to present a problem in a context which is as close to real-life as possible, or in language which is easily understood by the tutee, is perhaps the key to facilitating comprehension of the fundamental principles of a particular subject topic. Though rote learning of fact is adequate to gain a good deal of marks in primary and secondary examination, I feel in order to push for the highest grades, there needs to be a sound understanding of underlying concepts, which then enables the tutee to apply pre-existing knowledge to abstract or unfamiliar problems. Not only do I aim to prepare my tutees to cope with exams they work towards in school, but I hope they acquire skills which invariably prove useful to them in further education.
I work predominantly with material which follows the current curriculum of my tutees; particularly with younger children, I ensure primarily that they have a good grasp of literacy and numeracy. I encourage the use of past exam papers as a study aid, to develop an understanding of what examiners require; this I feel is best achieved by formulating 'model answers' which help consolidate revised material. I expect tutees to complete homework, which I set to gauge understanding of the topics that are covered. Normally I take into consideration homework set by school, which naturally takes priority over anything I may set. However, in the hope that my tutees are continually learning to manage their time more efficiently, I will stress that excuses cannot be made for not completing any homework I give, for the sake of making decent progress.
