I can help you achieve the outstanding Maths results that you deserve! I've been tutoring students of all levels and abilities since 2016, and have always found a way to help them improve and set themselves up for a bright future.
In June 2018 I graduated from Imperial College London with a 1st Class Honours in Civil & Environmental Engineering. I recently moved to Brighton (from London) and am taking time off from full time employment to do some personal interest research projects in topics ranging from Artificial Intelligence to Regenerative Economics. I’m looking forward to taking on new students in Brighton and helping them ace their exams!
I'm based in Kemptown and love being part of such a great community! I’m a regular at the Kemptown Bookshop, HumanKind Yoga Studio, and have recently become a volunteer with the local community composting scheme.
Education:
2014 – 2018 Imperial College London
Civil Engineering (MEng) –1st Class Honours
2009 - 2014 Steyning Grammar School
A-Levels – Further Mathematics (A*), Mathematics (A*), Physics (A*), Chemistry (A*)
GCSEs – Results overview (7 A*’s, 5 A’s)
I’ve been tutoring Maths since 2016 to students sitting their 11+, 13+ and GCSEs at a number of independent schools, including; Brighton College, Eton College, Emanuel, Fulham Prep, Westminster and Woldingham. In addition to private tutoring, I have been lucky enough to gain experience tutoring at an independent college in London, working closely with staff and teachers to ensure pupils do not fall behind whilst providing one-to-one sessions to those who struggled the most. In parallel I volunteered at a teaching centre near Holloway Road to support underserved communities.
I have experience in the following:
- Preparation for examinations including GCSE (Edexcel, AQA, OCR), Edexcel IGCSE, Common Entrance (ISEB)
- Preparation for entrance to prestigious schools such as Eton, where I helped prepare a student for the Maths papers in the King’s Scholarship Award.
- Supporting SEN students to keep up with the school curriculum.
- Improving learning techniques including note-taking, organisation, time management, learning from your own mistakes and revision.
Testimonials
2016 11+ – Math (Eton, Kings Scholarship Exam)
I have worked with Alex primarily to prepare him for his Math exam for Eton’s Kings Scholarship. There is little available in terms of past papers and guidance on the content of the exams, so my approach has been aimed at developing a genuine interest in Math, confidence when faced with complex and daunting questions and competency in using logic to draw on the appropriate skills and knowledge to work towards a solution. In addition, I ensured that he had a comprehensive grasp of the topics in the syllabus. One of my proudest moments in tutoring was when I found out that Alex had been successful in obtaining the Kings Scholarship at Eaton.
2018 GCSE New Curriculum – Math (Albemarle Independent College)
I taught the new Math GCSE Edexcel Curriculum to Anton at Albemarle College. Anton had sat his Math exam twice already but had struggled to attain the C (grade 5) that he needs. As Anton was now sitting his A-levels, he could not attend the scheduled GCSE Math classes. I was, therefore, his sole Math teacher, working with him for 4 hours per week to prepare him for his upcoming exam. I taught Anton at his school (Albemarle College) and worked closely with teachers and support staff to ensure that all necessary support structure was in place. Working at Albemarle has given me a unique insight and experience of the school system, whilst learning a lot from the teachers that I have been working with. I am glad to say that Anton achieved his desired grade and now has one less exam to worry about.
2017 IGCSE – Math (Brighton College, SEN: Dyslexia)
Sophie was bright and eager to learn, challenging me, asking me questions and presenting me with problems that she struggled with. Dyslexia shows itself most prevalently in English, however, it has also had an impact on her mathematics. Principally, I helped Sophie improve on areas of weakness identified during her end of year 9 exams to strengthen her foundations. With ambitions to achieve Grade 9 (A*), she is learning quickly and has shown marked improvement, evidenced by her moving up a set in her school year.
2016 GCSE – Math and Science Exam Preparation (Woldingham School, SEN ADHD)
Alice had a lot of trouble with concentration and had been diagnosed with ADHD. Initially, I found sessions challenging, as she was constantly being distracted and moving off-topic. I worked hard towards creating creative lesson plans that were as interactive and engaging and immensely improved her ability to concentrate. Planning lessons to engage Alice whilst ensuring that she progressed quickly and efficiently and solidified her comprehension of key material was a difficult learning curve for me, but one which I have found extremely rewarding. Alice surpassed expectations and achieved a B in her GCSE Math’s exam. Her parents, teachers, Alice and I were very pleased with this result.
2016 GCSE – Math, Physics & Mentoring (Westminster School)
I tutored Josh for a year, preparing him for his GCSE exams in June. I developed a very good working relationship with Josh, motivating him to be active in his own learning. In addition, I collaborate with his family to ensure that his tutoring is aligned with his full-time education at Westminster. The biggest challenge with Josh was his lack of motivation. He would often do the bare minimum, failing to fully complete homework assignments (beyond the minimum number of questions set) and neatly lay out his work. As a result, he was performing at a D grade, which was well below his intellectual ability. I have worked closely with Josh to foster his work ethic, motivation, and passion for learning. I have also assisted him in working more effectively and finding extra-curricular hobbies and activities that he is passionate about. In addition, I have been helping him lay out his work properly, keeping an organised folder and actively learning from his mistakes. All of which are skills that I know he will find useful in his future. Josh went on to achieve a B in mathematics.
In my experience as a tutor, I have found that the biggest challenges students face are; motivation, self-confidence and accountability. I have also found that these are often interconnected. My approach is a careful balance between enabling students to take charge whilst also holding them accountable. With an eye on the long term, I help my students develop into empowered individuals who take responsibility for bettering their own future. Sometimes they just need a little help on that journey, and that’s what I provide.
I aim to create a positive and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Together, we’ll tackle challenging topics step by step, practice exam techniques, and build a solid foundation that helps not only achieve their goals but also enjoy the process of learning maths.
I help my students to learn complex topics that they have previously struggled with, establish habits and systems to learn more effectively (revision plans, study timetables, goal setting, spaced repetition, etc.), experiment with different learning approaches to find the one that best fits them, understand their own strengths and weaknesses and set goals for each lesson, find resources to answer their own questions and confusions with a topic and develop critical thinking skills to solve even the most complex problems.
Maths is great! I love how it helps us understand the world and solve problems. Maths is first and foremost a language. Logical, creative, and endlessly useful, it helps us share and refine ideas and has been instrumental in building the world that we live in today. I’m passionate about showing others that it’s more than just numbers - it’s a tool for critical reasoning and rational thought.
