Hi I’m Gabby! I am an Oxford Law graduate and experienced private tutor. Over the last three years I have worked with over 100 students and taught more than 300 classes. I’ve worked with students from all over the world, helping them to achieve their goals and secure places at top schools and universities.
I studied law at Oxford University, taking additional modules in criminology and media law and have an interest in critical thinking. Before this I had the opportunity to live and study in several different schools and four different countries. I understand the impact that the right support and preparation can have before a big change in your education, and this is the reason I started teaching!
I am lucky to live in London where I enjoy visiting galleries and the theatre in my free time. I studied art throughout school, and it is still a passion of mine now. I also enjoy reading and talking with my students about the latest books and news they have come across. My favourite book is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (a compelling story which teaches the reader as much about family as it does the history of the Congo region).
I work collaboratively with my students to set aims and expectations. I strongly believe that the time we spend in class is yours, so it is important to me that I am providing you with the knowledge and support you need to meet your goals. I look forward to meeting you in class!
I am experienced in teaching all levels of English Second Language, GCSE, A-Level & IB English, standardised entrance tests (11+, 13+, ISEB Pretest, CAT4 etc) and interview preparation. I also provide university application support (including a booster programme for students year 9+ looking to enhance their profile), essay competition support, and academic proofreading services.
"Miss Gabby is a patient teacher. My English has improved a lot since I started having lessons with her."
"Lessons blend different teaching methods: warm up with simple questions, quick revision from the last lesson, sing along with actions, new vocabulary each time, etc. My boy enjoys the lesson so much and he looks forward to next one after each lesson. His English improves a lot after having some lessons with Miss Gabby."
"I like the teacher's way of teaching by asking my son different questions to let him think of answers. It's not just limited to 'yes' or 'no' answer questions, but he has to try his best to express in phrases or sentences. In this way, my boy could build up new vocabularies and learn the technique of answering a question."
Having taught over 100 students, I complete understand the need for a personalise approach! Before starting a series of classes I always conduct a short consultation to understand more about what you are looking to achieve, what your strengths are and where you are looking to improve. I will work with you to set clear goals and expectations. For example, we can decide how much time you can dedicate to between class reading and homework and I will work with you to provide extra reading and tasks to expand your knowledge and upskill outside of class. Once we have a clear idea of your goals, I will design personalised lessons tailored towards those targets. My lessons use visual aids, model examination questions, quizzes, and multimedia material. Although it is important to take education seriously, I believe it is important to bring fun into the classroom and I always start lessons off with a warmup. This could be a short discussion point, game or mini task depending on what is most suitable for your subject area. I also think it is crucial to make the most of our face time, so I prefer this time to be your active learning time (rather than time you spend quietly working on a task). Our lessons will be interactive, and we will work through several tasks together. Often, I will model answers and exercises or teach an exam technique and then allow you the opportunity to test this out. This process is important as every student is different, and it is important to work out what works for you! In an hour session we will usually cover three to four different tasks, switching between skills where possible. This keeps the class dynamic and means we can cover a lot of material in a short time. We will end our lessons with a short reflection which gives you the opportunity to let me know if there are tasks you enjoyed or areas you want to work on further. I believe that students who decide to dedicate their free time to additional learning should not only enjoy this but feel they are taking an active part in their learning. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, and I enjoy getting to know my students individually and supporting them in the way that best suits them. I have taught many students who have achieved great success, obtaining places at top universities and schools, and achieving the exam results they need to progress. I look forward to meeting you in class and working with you towards your goals!
