I have been teaching for 22 years, during which time I have had experience in both state education and the independent sector. I was brought up in Devon, though I have lived in London for over 30 years. I have a grown up daughter. I have many hobbies- obviously I like reading, but also I play guitar, tend my allotment here in Camden, and (when I have the time) I like to go birdwatching.
I taught for 10 years in state primary schools in North London, becoming Head of English. During this time I gained experience of teaching all years from Year 1 to Year 6. For the last 12 years I have worked in independent prep schools, mostly in Year 6, with a focus on preparing for 11+ entrance exams. Latterly I specialised in teaching English to years 5-8, including preparation for ISEB pre-tests and Common Entrance tests in English. Currently I am Head of English at a prep school in SW London and continue to tech English to Y5-8.
I am very much focused on what children need to do to pass the various entrance tests for senior schools. However, I believe that English should be fun, and I strive to make lessons interactive and child-centred. I see myself as a facilitator and coach. My long experience has taught me that this period of a child's life is stressful for both children and parents, and teachers need to be gentle, reassuring and encouraging.
