I have been a GCSE higher maths teaching assistant for the last 9 years. I came to England in 1979 after passing my A-levels in maths, Polish, German and geography. I accomplished a B grade in Cambridge proficiency in English and followed it up with a degree in psychology at Loughborough University.
Tutoring Experience
I have been teaching maths GCSE higher level for the last 9 years at a college in Leicester, as a maths teaching assistant. My GCSE students loved the way I taught them in lessons. Many students come back to thank me after their exams for the little cues I give them just before going in. My son James passed his GCSE maths with an A* in the summer, mainly due to my many hours of tutoring him.
Tutoring Approach
I look through students' schemes of work and encourage them to bring their exercise book from school. I go through their past and current lessons and do exercises to establish what they are good at and in which areas they are lacking. I explain parts that they are stuck on, going through step-by-step. I often have to go back to the basics of time tables and fractions until they are confident to establish the future understanding of more complicated areas. I'm aware of new additions to GCSE and know how to explain and teach them.
