Hello! I’m a qualified secondary English/ESOL teacher with 12 years’ teaching experience in supporting students of all ages. I am currently completing a PhD in American Literature, but have taught previously in secondary schools across Scotland, Asia and the Middle East, and am a PVG Scheme member. I’m passionate about helping learners to gain confidence in their own reading and writing. No matter your age, exam, coursework or assignment, I’m happy to help.
I am experienced in working with all age groups, but specialise in National 5, Higher, GCSE and A-Level. Lessons are £45 per hour, and an initial taster session is £25 per hour. Lessons can take place at your house or via Zoom. I am currently free during weekdays, evenings and weekends, and am happy to travel anywhere under an hour from my home by bus.
In Scotland I have taught students from BGE to Higher, specialising in National 5 and GCSE folio work. I have proudly overseen improvements in all my past tutoring students, many achieving A grades. I have a thorough knowledge of writing and composition and, having prepared many students for speaking tests, can help with solo talks or speaking assessments.
I have also worked for 7 years internationally as an English teacher in Japan, the UAE and China, teaching English to students aged 4-18 and providing private tuition to adult speakers. I have helped students at all levels prepare for English exams across Cambridge, Edexcel IGCSE/A-Level, American Common Core and the AP curriculum. I have worked with tutees with dyslexia, anxiety disorders and ADHD/ASD, always ensuring my students feel safe, comfortable and supported. I have also worked with PhD-level ESL students, proofreading their theses and papers before submission.
I’m also an unabashed Shakespeare geek, and won a prize for distinction in my Shakespeare course as an undergraduate. If there is any aspect of Shakespeare you need help with, I’m here, and ready to get stuck into some Macbeth witchery or Capulet melodrama!
It’s important to make sure that my tutees feel comfortable studying one-to-one with me outside a classroom environment. Not everybody feels confident in academic writing, and that’s ok - together we can work to develop this. By talking through the text with my tutee and finding out what engages them, I usually find that they have understood the material very well, but have simply struggled to put it into words. Once we have worked a bit on vocabulary, critical reading and composition skills, my students are usually surprised by their progress, and how much they are capable of on their own.
No matter your learning style, we will find a lesson structure and study schedule that works for you and helps you see results. I will also provide as much homework as you feel you can handle, if you think you need the extra practice.
