I’m an Oxford University graduate (English Literature and Language, BA Hons 2003, MA 2008) and Qualified Teacher (QTS 2009) offering tuition in English Literature and Language for years 7-13, including GCSE, iGCSE, A-Level, Oxbridge entrance and general enrichment.
Full DBS check completed.
I have taught in both state and private schools in London (St Marylebone, St Augustine’s, Colfe’s and Coloma Convent Girls’ School) and am a mum to 3 children.
After Oxford University, I worked with students in a large church in Newcastle and then in the City of London in HR at UBS Investment Bank and in Internal Communications at Lloyd’s of London. During this time I also helped to run residential summer camps for teenagers.
In my free time I enjoy running, reading and cooking.
I have always enjoyed opportunities to interact individually with pupils in my teaching career and believe that tutoring gives a unique opportunity to help individuals work on their skills in a way that just isn’t possible to the same extent in a busy classroom. I love to see students really enjoy texts for themselves and learn how to express their views well. Learning to analyse any text is a key transferable skill which has value for any occupation in the future.
I have a warm, relaxed and engaging teaching style and aim to provide my students with carefully tailored advice and challenging tasks each week.
My aim is to build confident readers and writers, developing independence in closely analysing language, structure and form, essay planning and oral presentation. I will equip my students with the skills they need and the technical terminology necessary to be able to read ANY text and be able to present their ideas clearly and convincingly. We will work on precisely answering essay questions and meeting assessment criteria.
Having taught different exam boards (such as AQA, iGCSE and OCR among others), it’s been wonderful to have had the opportunity to teach many different types of literature from across the globe and from different periods in history. Some of my favourite areas of literature are the Victorian novels, especially Thomas Hardy, the Gothic novels, John Donne and the metaphysical poets as well as 20th century American drama. I love reading and encourage all my students to enjoy different books for themselves.
Each lesson is tailored to the student’s individual needs where there will be opportunities to share their personal areas of weakness and areas for improvement for us to work on together.
A written piece of work will be set each week and students will receive detailed feedback and ideas for improvement in the following lesson.
I endeavour to do my very best to help all of my students with their work, however, I cannot guarantee to improve their grades at school.
Each lesson lasts 60 minutes and I will ask you to send through two written pieces of work in advance of the lessons.
Usually, I ask parents to book in blocks of 5 lessons. I will send my UK bank details and terms and conditions so that you can then prepay for the 5 lessons. After the first block of 5, you can continue to book further blocks of 5 and pay for each block in advance.
24 hours notice must be given if a lesson needs to be rearranged. Lessons missed without 24 hours notice will not be refunded.
I now have a limited number of slots during UK state school term times.
