I recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in MA(Hons) English, and I have a passion for teaching. I love tutoring as it's wonderful to help students reach their full potential while simultaneously helping them learn to love the subject!
I have 2+ years experience tutoring in English alongside my university studies in the same subject. I have taught a variety of students from age 9 up to 17 both online and in-person. This includes basic help with homework, reading and writing skills, and also GCSE (or equivalent) and A Level (or equivalent) studies and exam preparation.
I believe it's important to see where a student struggles most and start by focusing there. Ultimately every student is different and my teaching style adapts to their individual needs. With secondary level I like to help with homework and this quickly highlights where some extra practise is needed. I subsequently formulate fun activities and tasks that focus on these areas. With GCSE and A Level students my tutoring style focuses on exam preparation. A student will be evaluated on their application of everything they've learnt in class about a novel, play, poet or language analysis. I focus on applying each of these in exam context to help students successfully use their knowledge to shine in an exam! If a student is struggling to understand a set text or struggles with their language analysis skills, then we go back to basics and I take the time to teach relevant skills and unpack texts to better their reading comprehension. I also offer help with coursework, improving writing skills and essay structure.
I promise to make lessons fun and engaging - not a boring classroom environment! - and I focus on improving confidence in students that need a little extra practise in the subject.
