Hello, my name is Helen, and I have been a Chemistry teacher for over 20 years. I am passionate about supporting students to achieve their full potential and grow in confidence. I have a first-class honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, where I also completed my teacher training. Currently I live in Scotland and am studying for a MSc in Education.
As an experienced teacher, I bring a deep commitment to high-quality, inclusive teaching that supports every student to thrive. With a comprehensive understanding of the curriculum and excellent subject knowledge, I have experience of teaching at all levels and supporting students through examination courses with consistently high outcomes. I have extensive experience working for the SQA (Scotland’s examination body) and Edexcel/Pearson. As a result, I have a thorough grasp of course specifications and assessment procedures. This means I am well-equipped to help students prepare for examinations, including GCSE, A level, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. I have experience tutoring students, both in person and online (using a combination of MS Teams and OneNote). I believe that it is important to have strong subject knowledge and teaching experience to offer tutoring and so I only offer tutoring in my area of expertise and experience which is Chemistry.
My approach to tutoring is student focused. Recognising and supporting individual needs is a core aspect of my practice. The pace of lessons and resources used are adapted to meet the learning needs of students. Using a range of evidence-based strategies, my teaching ensures that students can develop their understanding and practice applying their knowledge. Tutorials are interactive, making use of a range of tools to engage students and assess understanding. Feedback is given regularly to aid progress. My students report that they are well supported and feel comfortable asking questions and contributing during tutorials.
