Hello! I’m Helena. I have been teaching English and Philosophy for more than 4 years, since finishing my degree in Philosophy and Theology from Mansfield College, Oxford. I enjoy seeing a student grow and reach heights they did not previously think was possible.
Before Oxford, I studied the International Baccalaureate, with English, Philosophy, Spanish and History as my higher-level subjects. After my undergraduate degree, I completed a Master’s of Law, with a dissertation on Modern Slavery, and have recently passed my Solicitors Qualifying Exams Part 1.
I have over 4 years of teaching experience, and have taught both young and mature students from different countries, with diverse educational needs.
Here are some of the reviews I have received:
‘Helena is a wonderful tutor and a great presence to learn with. I've really enjoyed her clarity, insight and her approach to work. I would recommend her to anyone wholeheartedly.’
– Felix (MA Psychology)
‘I've been fortunate to have had Helena as a private tutor for nearly two years. I've come back to study (MA Philosophy) after a significant gap from completing my BA. Helena has been supportive and patient (I'm dyslexic) in this tricky field of study but one that she excels in, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it as a private tutor.’
– Thomas (MA Philosophy)
‘Helena is very thoughtful in her preparation of her lessons. Very constructive lessons which is a real help on the Philosophy IB course. Thank you.’
– Geraldine (Mother of twins taking IB Higher and Standard Philosophy)
‘It was really helpful, I have learnt a lot of things in the lesson . The lesson is also very inspiring which helps me to form and write my point down in a more sophisticated way rather than just verbally or an idea in back of my head’
– Eva (Year 9 and 10, English Literature and Language)
I provide Oxford-style tutorials, ensuring that each student's individual needs are met and that they are empowered to excel.
Before a tutorial, I liaise with the student or their guardian to determine the precise needs of the student and what they want to achieve from the tutorials. I then prepare for the lesson and ensure that I respond to the student in a way that is tailored towards their individual study needs and styles.
I lived in the USA for ten years and have Spanish heritage and Spanish speaking skills. Growing up, I was home educated and went to a private school and then a grammar. I therefore understand how essential it is to both start with the end in mind, being aware of marking criteria and personal goals, but also the importance of reaching a student where they are at, ensuring that they find the value in the subject.
I have worked at a law firm and stood for local council. I regularly return to the school where I was a House Captain to speak to and encourage the next generation of Sixth Formers on Careers Day. I organise events on social issues and have published articles in the local newspaper as well as had my own radio show.
In all my different roles, I have used my English and Philosophy skills and knowledge every day. I have therefore seen their worth, both in an academic context and out in the world. I love sharing this passion with my students!
