I am a history tutor with 7 years experience helping students improve and achieve the grades they are capable of.

A History graduate with a strong 2:1 and a real passion for history and passing on knowledge to others. Over my time studying and tutoring history, I have used a mix of improving subject knowledge with the awareness of the assessment criteria to help students improve their contextual understanding of what is needed to score well in exams and coursework.

At university my focus was on 19th and 20th Century history with my specialty subject being the Cold War, specifically, the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis on which I completed my final year dissertation, achieving a first class mark.
I also had a focus on USA and Russian history back to the 18th Century so can provide additional context for A-Level students who will need to provide evidence of additional research to score high marks.

I understand the techniques required to confidently answer exam style questions and achieve high grades. I am capable of delivering tuition on all subject topics currently provided under AQA and Edexcel.
Aside from affirming knowledge, I aim to pass on the skills required to get knowledge of the subject onto the page when completing exams.

I provide and request feedback both for myself and students at milestones throughout tuition, which helps to ensure we keep progressing as expected and use our time efficiently.

Tutoring Experience

I have worked with students over varying timescales, some long term, and others just a few sessions. The overriding theme with all young students is a lack of clarity of what is being assessed and how.

I do a lot of work outside of sessions preparing useful documents and other materials that are beneficial to students and aids in visual and active learning. These are then also great tools for revision.

I also place a particular focus on writing and exam skills and using those to improve grades.

I have always loved studying History and the intricacies of planning and writing a high-level, well researched piece of work. I use that passion and knowledge to tutor and inspire others to enjoy their studies, developing skills that will help with history exams, but ultimately improve communication and life skills.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring in History is to focus on the skills involved with writing a quality piece of work. History requires good use of English and a variety of skills to present the information you have and what to use.

We will start in the first session by understanding where you are now and where you want to be. This allows us to set goals and make sure we are working towards them all the time.

My style will focus on the individual needs of a student. If you struggle with remembering dates, facts or information then we can focus on that and how to apply them in context.
However, if you are proficient with dates and facts but aren't quite getting the marks you feel you deserve, then we can work on writing style and how the information you use is being presented.

I believe that anyone can improve their grades just by taking the step of mentally knowing that they want to improve and that they are better than a letter (or number). There are definite ways of tackling grades with preparation and hard work, but also through proper mental attitude.

You are taking the first step to a better grade by acknowledging that you are better than what you're achieving today. Your future marks do not have to be representative of what has happened before. Let's work together to get you where you want to be.
