Having lived and worked in Japan for seven years, I have gained not only a fluency in the Japanese language but also an awareness and appreciation of the subtleties of Japanese culture. I love the Japanese people and enjoy teaching about their language and culture. My PhD investigates the values and perspectives of contemporary Japanese university students. I am also fluent in German and spent a year living in Germany during my university years. I have a great affinity with Germany and the German people and have several German friends that I am still in touch with even 30 years after living there. Prior to teaching languages my most recent employment involved using my German and Japanese languages on the telephone and composing emails on a daily basis. My French is proficient and I am pleased to have been able to help several GCSE students improve their grades.
I have been teaching modern foreign languages (Japanese, German and French) as a private tutor since 2011. I have successfully tutored students to A’ level in Japanese and beyond to their university final year, where I have been their sole tutor either on-line or (pre-covid) in face-to-face lessons. I have also helped students achieve a higher result than predicted in GCSE French, where the private lessons with me supplemented their lessons in school. Additionally, I have tutored several adult beginners in Japanese, French and German for holiday and business purposes. Prior to this, whilst living in Japan (1999-2006), I gained extensive experience teaching Japanese and English as a Foreign Language to various groups of non-native speakers ranging from private lessons, to joint lessons, to groups of primary school, high school and university students.
My students appreciate my enthusiasm and love of languages. I aim to inspire my students by making lessons fun and relevant. The text book is merely a tool that I use to facilitate conversation and help students make the language their own. I can offer tutoring on Google Meet, Zoom, Skype or other social media platform for casual/business use or for preparation towards GCSE, A' Level or university level Japanese, German or French.
