Hi! I am Head of Law and teacher of both A level Law and BTEC Law at Birkenhead Sixth Form College. I am a Law Graduate from the University of Liverpool gaining a 2:1 LLB Law degree in 2007. This was followed by a Post Graduate Certifcate of Education in Citizenship. I am now in my fourteenth year of teaching and absolutely love it.

I would describe myself as very committed and dedicated to all aspects in my life and give everything 100%. On a personal level, I have a bubbly personality and have many interests such as running and dancing. During my free time I am also an adult leader at a local Rainbows group.

Tutoring Experience

During my time at university I was President of the Legal Society and a mentor to younger students studying law. This involved being available to discuss problems and many of these related to study issues and the correct approach to study.

Since becoming part of the teaching staff at St Mary’s, I have gained vast experience and responsibility as their only Law teacher and since joint a team of Law teacher at BSFC. This has involved development of appropriate syllabuses, the introduction of a Law GCSE, resources, schemes of work, coordination of assessment and setting achievable targets for students. As well as enhancing my organisational and planning skills, this task enabled me to teach aspects of Law creatively using innovative teaching methods and activities. I really enjoyed teaching my schemes of work and I was very pleased that pupils were both enthused and inspired by all the themes covered.

During a recent Ofsted inspection I was observed and and judged as ‘Outstanding’ according to their criteria and even mentioned in the school’s Ofsted report! Hopefully this is a factor that contributed to obtaining a 100% pass rate at A level and all my students to date achieving or exceeding (in the majority of cases) their ALPs predicted grades.

In my most recent results 87.5% of the class achieved a High grade which is A*-B with the remaining getting a C.

As part of my PGCE I travelled to The Gambia where I was lucky enough to teach English for a small period of time, this was a very humbling experience.

Tutoring Approach

I have tutored many tutees through First Tutors, all who have been very pleased with the tuition provided.

I believe that every individual is unique and so my teaching approach will vary from student to student using visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning techniques. I try to motivate students to aspire and achieve their best and provide a quality teaching environment where they can succeed by tailoring sessions around their areas of weakness.

Experiences from my own personal school life have shown me that a good teacher can offer more than just an education; they can act as a confidant, an adviser and a figure of creativity and in a lot of cases (such as my own) an inspiration. With this in mind it is important to be approachable so that the student feels comfortable in asking questions and building up their interest in the subject.
