Maths Lessons in Sale

Hi there, I’m Joe! After completing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield (where I graduated with a 2:1) in 2021, I have spent eighteen months working as a Project Engineer for a Light-Source Precision Instrument Company. I am now based in South Manchester and in my spare time I like to play football, basketball and go bouldering most weekends. Additionally, after completing University I went travelling to South East Asia for almost four months.

I have always had an interest in Maths and Science throughout my academic life, but Maths has always been my favourite. My degree and job choice was heavily influence by my love for Mathematics as Engineering relies so heavily on solving equations and using mathematical principles.

If you’d like to discuss your goals and what your child would like to achieve, please feel free to contact me.

Tutoring Experience

Last year, after 18 months of tutoring, my student went from a predicted 6 in class to achieving a 7 in his Maths GCSE. Additionally, my other current student moved up to top set in preparation for his upcoming GCSEs next year. These are the most current updates I have to share.

At University, whilst being an active member of multiple societies, I was an online Maths tutor for three years in my spare time. I worked for a company called My Tutor, which was very prestigious at the time only accepting 1 in 7 applicants to become a tutor. I completed over 300 lessons with over 40 different pupils all of varying ages and levels of ability. As well as being a successful private tutor, My Tutor also ran a ‘schools’ program aimed at giving disadvantaged students an opportunity to receive free one on one tuition. This was a scheme which I felt truly passionate about so I put myself forward for those lessons and I know that my pupils really appreciated it. I have attached the link to my profile below:

After I graduated I had to leave My Tutor as I was no longer a student but I have continued to offer private tuition both online and in person alongside my graduate career.

Tutoring Approach

In our initial meeting I would like to establish what level your child is currently working at and how far they aim to progress. This means I can plan future lessons accordingly and effectively in order to tackle the areas in which your child may require support. Past paper/class tests can be a good indicator of this.

I believe that improving a student’s confidence in Maths massively improves their grade, and the best way to achieve that is through answering questions. In my sessions, I will provide the student with question sheets to do in preparation for the next session- this will allow me to mark their work and then talk and work through any mistakes with them. Additionally, we will go through other questions from the same topics in which there were originally a few mistakes to really consolidate their learning. At the end of the session I like to leave 5-10 minutes for the student to show me any other questions they might be struggling with, so I can include this in future lessons. I am also very happy to go through questions that your child's school has provided and tailor the lessons to how they want to learn.

At the end of the day, each student will have their own strengths and weaknesses when studying Maths. It is my aim is to reinforce those strengths and identify any weaknesses in order to enable your child to become a confident and accomplished mathematician.
