I am a family man with three adult daughters. I have worked with young people all my life and greatly enjoy communicating my love of maths to others. I find it fulfilling when my students find success in the subject, but also when they say that they have enjoyed the lessons. It is especially pleasing when they make a breakthrough in understanding and gain that strong sense of achievement. I want my students to be "overcomers" in this way.
I am an experienced maths teacher with nearly thirty years of teaching experience in secondary schools. I have always taught GCSE and A-level exam classes (including Further Maths) and consistently obtained very good results. I served for six years on the Cambridge Exam Board Subject Committee for Maths. My main teaching posts (working for nearly ten years in each post) have been at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington and at St Swithuns School in Winchester. I have taught all ages and all abilities from 11-18 years of age.
The first step is to learn from the student what their individual needs are. Then, over time, areas of strength and weakness should become clear. I believe that the first key to learning maths successfully is full understanding. So, I would seek to ensure that good foundations were in place. After that I would seek to steadily build confidence. I believe I am a good communicator and a good motivator.
