A few years ago I retired from full-time teaching, after a successful career preparing students for Mathematics examinations, both as a class teacher and private tutor. I enjoy helping students to reach their full potential and in particular find satisfaction in identifying and removing barriers to their learning.
I have over 30 years' teaching experience, 25 of them at New College, Swindon, where I was Head of Maths and Science in a department rated Grade 1 by Ofsted. During that time I taught mostly AS and A2 Mathematics and Further Mathematics to 16-19 year-olds.
As a Private Tutor I have provided revision support and exam preparation, as well as working with students over the full duration of their A Level courses.
I enjoy working one-to-one with students at all levels, from those struggling with A Level material to Oxbridge candidates.
My approach is exam-oriented. As a one-time examiner I am aware of the many ways students needlessly lose marks - easily avoided with a few pointers from an experienced tutor.
At the moment I am only tutoring over the internet.
What I have been doing recently is asking students to attempt a past paper or an exercise prior to the session then meeting (currently Google Meet or Zoom) to help them out with any problems and go over any topics that seem to be poorly understood.
This has been working very well.
