I am a 28-year-old professional, who has worked in journalism and public affairs. I work as a private tutor around such other commitments. In my spare time, I have several voluntary roles, including as a school governor in Kensington and Chelsea, and as a trustee of Young K&C (an organisation dedicated to improving opportunities for young people in the area I have grown up). My hobbies include playing sport (football and tennis, etc) and travelling.
I have more than 10 years on-off experience as a private tutor, having started work whilst completing my full-time education. The reason for this is that I have prioritised working with clients around my full-time education and career, and have worked for focused periods of 12-18 months.
I have taught English and Maths to pupils up to 16 years old in London and Bristol. I have also taught all subjects to primary school and Common Entrance levels (for example, French, Latin and sciences). Pupils of mine have achieved top SATs scores, Common Entrance results, GCSE grades and have also secured their places in first-choice schools across south-west London.
I have also worked as a specialist teaching support member of staff at a primary school in Earl's Court, helping high-ability children reach their potential in Maths for their Key Stage 2 SATs. This involved lesson planning, marking and the ability to teach groups and classes.
In a voluntary capacity, I have likewise taught TEFL ('Teaching English as a Foreign Language'). This gave me a strong grounding in working with pupils with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.
I like to build strong relationships with pupils. I think both the tutor and the tutee get more when lessons are focused, but also have the right atmosphere.
I plan lessons based on the pupil's needs and the national curriculum, although I also think it is important to be able to think on my feet, so that I can devise additional questions either to embed learning or stretch the pupil.
